I confess, I’ve been very, very lucky. I haven’t been doing my backups as often as I should, but last night I backed up ALL my most important works-in-progress.
Lady Luck must have been looking out for me because when I booted up my pc this morning, the harddrive on which I usually save all my data was…’inaccessible’.
When I looked at the map of my harddrives [I have two], my data drive didn’t even have the NTFS operating system structure. I had to format the drive in order to be able to use it again. Needless to say, I won’t be using it for anything critical from here on in. Once I can afford to have another one installed, it’ll be gone.
I have lost some data, including the most recent pics used in my blog, and a heap of raw footage from videos I’ve worked on, but at least all of that stuff was completed. The pics were uploaded to WordPress and the finished videos were uploaded to Youtube so I haven’t lost anything critical. That’s why I say I’ve been so lucky; if this had happened a few days earlier, I would have lost a week’s worth of video-in-progess. And if I hadn’t backed up last night… -shudder-
In case you’re wondering, I backup periodically to an external harddrive that can take masses of data. In between times, I backup work-in-progress data to a thumbdrive that sits on my desk all the time and is quick and easy to use. Unfortunately, I don’t back up data often enough.
I hope that most of what I lost was of the ‘might come in useful one day’ variety, but I won’t know until I go to use something and find it isn’t there. I tell myself I’ll be more organized next time, but I know my good intentions won’t last. How I wish each pc came with a dedicated backup drive and backed itself up at the end of every day…
-sigh-
Please…if you haven’t backed up your important data recently…go and do it now. I was lucky. You may not be.
cheers,
Meeks

p.s. your browser window? If you’re using Windows there should be a set of small icons at the top right of the screen – a dash, a box and the big red X. Pressing the box once should take the browser window to full screen. Pressing the box a second time should reduce the window size by about 1/2.
Once the window is at 1/2 size, point the mouse at the top bar of the window and click & hold. You should now be able to ‘drag’ the window down or across until you can see a ‘corner’. Hover the mouse over the corner and the mouse pointer changes to a diagonal double arrow. When it does, click-hold-drag the corner towards the middle. This allows you to manually adjust the size of the window.
It /is/ a workaround but without seeing what’s going on I can’t offer a more permanent solution.

I lost work once. I had got a backup, but not to the latest additions. It is soul destroying, I know. A whole load of chapters just–gone!
Then the other week I lost a poem. No idea how it happened. It should have been in my Google docs as I wrote it there. All the others, before and after, were there, but this one gone.
Fortunately, in this case, it was a poem inspired by a picture posted by an online friend. I posted the poem in his comments. I found the post, after much Facebook searching, and copied the poem. Phew!
I back up to an external drive and the cloud now.

Have Mac, set up Time Machine, it backs up once an hour. You can do it more frequently, or less. I do it when I’ve done a chunk of anything.
I don’t have to remember anything, which is good. NO brain.

Hmm…how does your Time Machine work? Does it overwrite everything every hour or does it just make multiple copies? I used to use the Windows backup on a schedule but I literally ran out of disk space.

It has a backup system to an external hard drive that does partial backups (new stuff, I guess) so you can always get everything back as far back as it goes. When it needs more space, it starts deleting the older backups.
The automatic feature is what everyone needs. If NOTHING has changed, it doesn’t back up. I haven’t restored many times, but when I have to, it’s there.

When it comes to important stuff, I make two cloud backups and three hard-drive backups (encrypted, because I’m also paranoid), one of which is in a different location, in case of fire or other such disaster. You can never be too careful!
I recommend a tool called Crystal Disk Info, that checks your hard drives’ health and warns you when they’re about to kick the bucket.

Thanks – I’m just starting up my new MacBook Air, and will have to keep the old Macbook working for a couple of programs – so I’m wondering whether to buy a new external harddrive for the new one’s backups, and it’s time to ask all those questions. Drives are inexpensive, and maybe I need to keep the machines’ contents separate.
When you don’t have a lot of usable brain time, all this stuff takes a lot longer, and I look for shortcuts. Writing isn’t a problem, but learning can be, especially with new machines and new concepts.

I can’t speak for the Mac’s but I’d definitely recommend an external harddrive for backups. Mine is nice and small so in case of fire I can just grab it up and go. Assuming I remember, of course.
A lot of commenters have mentioned autobackup options that I intend to check out. May be worthwhile checking them out for the Mac’s too.

Autobackup is the way to go – because you don’t have to think to be covered. Thinking’s not my strong suit these days, not all day long, and I’d probably forget.

Good point – unless it enriches something, points out a possible plot hole, or gives you a better way.
Not sure what I expected but one of my previous reviewers dinged me a star because in his mind (which actually turns out to be the more common definition), trilogies are NOT usually one single story with three parts but the same characters, but three related ones.
If I had thought about that, or looked it up, I might have done some tiny thing to indicate my main reason was that Amazon POD can’t handle 500K word books in a single binding.

Gah…absolutely no need for that! He’s horribly wrong. Some of /the/ best series are one story spread over three or more volumes. Each volume has it’s own ‘purpose’ and resolution, but said purpose and resolution are still part of the over-arching story.
Some things you simply have to ignore.

All feedback given politely is carefully evaluated. I may ultimately disagree, and may or may not change something, but other people have a very different perspective, and I learned something from his: my kind is probably published mostly in a single volume.
It’s too late to do much except maybe amend the book descriptions – Amazon lets you do that whenever you like. I’ve put it on the list – but am up to my ears in elephants right now.
I like words I’ve never hear before, some neologisms, learning something new, other perspectives – I take after my grandmother there: she was tickled pink when she found the day’s bit of new information. It’s a good outlook on a world and life filled with the extraordinary.

I can’t put it in here because it will be executed, but it’s open angle brackets with a slash i, slash i close angle bracket – everything in between will be italicized. Same with b instead of i. Not hard – I have a list of the basics somewhere.

I don’t have much of a choice.
1) I count rest periods part of my sleep – all I require of myself is to lie there, in a darkened quiet room, for at least either the time I have available or 30 minutes, whichever is largest. So no wishing for better, no getting up because “it isn’t working,” no stressing about not being able to DEstress.
2) get up – things are usually better for a while – but take another rest as soon as necessary.
3) try not to waste the ‘good time’ – because I know it won’t last.
Adding stress to stress doesn’t help – and only wastes part of the time I could be writing.
It’s what I need to do – otherwise I’d get no writing done at all, and would probably be very distressed about it.
It’s a physical illness, this ME/CFS, and I have found a way to still get some of what I want while ‘they’ figure out how to fix us.
What else could I do?

Lucky you did the backup! I think there’s a law of the universe by which, if you don’t back up, automatically the main data disk will fail. Happened to a friend of mine – he’d just about finished a complete book on his laptop, never backed anything up, and the hard drive died. He had to pay for specialist techs to dismantle the drive, spin up the platters on a recovery rig, and scarf the data off it. (The book was subsequently published and won a number of awards).
