I was going to say “I hate Christmas!” but that’s not completely true. It’s not so much that I hate Christmas, it’s that I hate the lead up to Christmas, especially this year. December in Australia is the first month of summer, and summer means bushfires and snakes [we’ve seen two already].
In normal years I would have spent most of spring mowing a little bit every day. We’re on 1.6 hectares, and that equates to a lot of grass. The alpacas do their best, but in spring they can’t eat the new grass fast enough, and once the grass sets seed they won’t touch it.
So that’s in a normal year – a little bit of mowing spread out over a couple of months. This year has been different though. Australia is experiencing its third La Nina event in a row which has meant rain, rain and more rain. All that rain has triggered unprecedented floods all along the eastern seaboard with lives lost, crops lost and whole towns inundated.
We don’t have to worry about floods here in Warrandyte as we’re on a ridge, but all that rain means the grass grows an inch over night. And it’s too wet to mow during the day, especially with a small, cordless lawnmower.
In desperation, I paid for a guy to come in and whipper snipper1 the worst of it, but that’s left sheaths of grass drying on the ground. Exhibit A:

What’s worse, the new grass is already growing through. It has to be mowed. ๐ฆ
And now we get to the other reason I hate December so much: things break down. This year, my faithful Ozito cordless lawnmover has struggled even with the lower grass, hardly surprising given that I bought it in 2016 and have used it in ways it was never designed to be used. So I had to go out and buy a new cordless mower.
I tried the new model Ozito, but it died after just one mowing session. Note to Ozito: I am so disappointed.
Thank gods Bunnings let me swap the new Ozito for a Ryobi cordless. The Ryobi is a great little mower but it’s battery takes ages to re-charge and the catcher is a stupid design so the outlet from the blade constantly clogs up. But at least it does cut like a champion. Exhibit B, a pic taken looking back up at the house:

But December hasn’t finished with me yet.
We had a couple of days of ‘hot’ weather recently so we filled up the firefighting pumps with petrol and tested them. One started without a hitch. The other tried to start but just wouldn’t catch. Grrrrr….
I do have a fabulous mechanic who fixed the last problem with the pumps, but he’s flat out until….you guessed it, Christmas.
I’m not too worried as I don’t think we’ll have any major fires until maybe mid-January, and one of the pumps does work, but still…I did not need this, not the worry and certainly not the hit to my budget. If the Reserve Bank is reading this post <<hysterical laughter>> I didn’t intend to contribute to inflation this year!
Anyway, it looks as if it might rain again soon so I’d better get out there. Who needs a gym when you’ve got grass? -grump-

And here I am complaining about the snow (and bitter cold) we got today! But it’s easier that way to stay in front of the fire and look at the lights on the Christmas tree. Good luck – December is almost halfway over!

lol – we should be eating salads and lolling about in shorts and t-shirts. Instead, we’re huddling around the heater too because we can’t seem to get rid of winter this year!

It’s not the easiest of months… everything heats up, runs together then it seems like the world stops… i don’t hate December but I manage it very carefully. Once we navigate it, it will be 2023. Where did that go…

‘manage it very carefully’. Yes! As for 2023, I’m not looking forward to it at all. I turn 70 in 23 and it feels like just yesterday that I celebrated 60. The years are going by much too fast. Stop! Right now. :d

It’s the same in NZ – December rolls around and instantly all the lawns begin growing as if there’s no tomorrow. A few years back I bought a battery mower, feeling quite virtuous for doing so, but it’s not been a great success. The battery only just lasts for 1 cut, and the mower isn’t powerful enough to deal with the heaviest grass. And the lawns grow wildly. Sigh. (This is without factoring in the usual Great Xmas Shutdown problem by which everything has to be finished by 23 December and nothing can be deferred to January…)

I’ve been very happy with my battery powered mowers but…I tend to run out of puff before the battery! lol
Speaking of January, don’t you hate the ‘dead’ time between xmas and new year?

It’s always a bit of an anti-climax, isn’t it – the huge build-up to Xmas, then…. not very much happens apart from relentless ‘Boxing day’ sales that last about a week. I don’t know whether it’s an antipodean issue, given that it’s summer and everybody’s on holiday. This year it’s highly likely I’ll be working for some of it – I write for a living and there are never enough hours in the day.

lol – I still remember when EVERYTHING closed down over January. It was as if the whole country up stakes and went on vacation at the same time. Hmm…actually they did, to places like Rosebud where they camped on the foreshore 2 inches away from everyone else. I’ve never understood it.

I had to DDG 1.6 Hectares–almost 4 acres. That’s a lot of mowing.

Ugh…I misspoke. I only have 1.6 acres, not hectares. Can I plead senility? Also, what is DDG?

No need. My sis has about twice that, but half is a forest. She mows a lot, too! Me, I have only half an acre!

Yeah, it’s a heck of a lot to mow. My neighbour has one of those ride-on mowers and I drool every time I see it out and about. Maybe one day.

lol – thanks, Dan! I have no idea where the name came from but I do know we say scrub instead of brush so perhaps that’s why the name was changed. ๐

I still use a push mower (I’m the motor!) but I have only little bits of lawn. It’s our third La Nina winter in as many years here, which this time has taken the form of below normal temperatures and even a bit of snow, but no floods (as yet). Nowadays it seems we’re always anticipating something bad.

Ugh. I should have realised that La Nina would cause flooding over your way as well. I remember when Widds’ place came close to flooding. Somehow we never connect up the dots.

Hi Meeks, I was looking just yesterday to see if you had posted. I miss you when you don’t post. It is the beginning of summer here too, and like you, we are getting a lot of rain. We had an enormous hail storm two days ago and my garden was decimated. At least my baby hadeda has come home and is okay. I picked up 5 black rubbish bags of leaves yesterday and that is the tip of the iceberg. I hope you come right with your pump problem and your mower keeps mowing. PS we used to live on a plot so I know all about fire breaks and whipper snappers although we do call them brush cutters here.

It’s insane, isn’t it? If anyone doubted climate change, I bet they don’t doubt now.
Anyway, what is a ‘hadeda’????

A hadeda is a very big bird that is native to southern Africa and makes a huge noise. I have a family that has lived in my garden for years and the babies grow up here. I had a family of woodpeckers in one of my trees and I found them all dead today, parents and three babies. I am quite devastated. Lots of people still don’t believe in climate change because they don’t want to change their lifestyles.

Oh…I’m so sorry to hear about your woodpeckers. I know they must have felt like family to you. I know my magpies feel like family to me.
And thanks for the info on the hadeda. You piqued my curiosity so I looked for some pics!

I know very little about birds but from the shape of the head and beak, I /think/ we get something similar stopping by at the fish pond every now and then. But ours have white on their heads.
