Many years ago, I started a blog to showcase book recommendations by other authors. It was a nice idea that never got off the ground. And then along came Shepherd, a nice idea that did get off the ground. I’m thrilled to be a part of this new way of reaching readers.
But what is Shepherd?
I see Shepherd as a cross between Goodreads, that blog I mentioned, and word of mouth. Plus the website itself is beautifully laid out and provides readers with lists of books recommended by authors themselves. Each recommendation comes with a kind of personalised mini-review, and the whole website just works.
This is a pic of my list. I called it ‘The best books that explore what it means to be human’:
Each author gets to recommend five books so click on the link:
https://shepherd.com/best-books/explore-what-it-means-to-be-human
…to see all five of mine.
At the bottom of my list are links to other lists in a similar vein. I had a look at some of them – how could I not? – and discovered that I’m not alone in loving Dune and Left Hand of Darkness! And that makes me think I might give the authors who recommended them a try. After all, if they like what I like, maybe they’ll write stuff I’ll like too!
If you’re a voracious reader like me and always on the look out for new favourite authors, Shepherd could well become the discovery tool of the future.
cheers,
Meeks

I just got back from reading about all 5 of your selections. That was very cool as I haven’t read any of the books except Dune. I have a Shepherd page too that I’ll share in January. It’s an interesting concept and is getting a lot of press. Congrats for joining. That was fun, my friend. ❤

-grin- Thanks for looking at my Five. I agonised over which five to choose and they’re very specific to that particular theme, but there are so many others. I think I may have to come up with some more lists. Definitely fun. 😀

Oh, I didn’t know you could have more than one list. They take a lot of time to pull together, but it was fun. 🙂

I’m pretty sure you can have multiple lists, they just have to be of different ‘themes’? I think….

Sounds like a great site. I also read the whole Dune series many years ago and loved it!

Very welcome, EllaD. 😀 I have high hopes for Shepherd, especially now that Amazon is so hopeless for book discovery.

I was not surprised by your 5 books having read and loved Miira I will explore Shepherd as I really only use Good Reads to track my reads and see what my granddaughter is reading as we have similar tastes but I don’t get ideas of what to read next form there….Thank you for sharing for find 🙂

Very welcome, Carol. I’ve been getting more and more disappointed with Amazon as a way to find books so I really like the ideas behind Shepherd. Meet you there. 😀

I found out about Shepherd by reading another writer’s post on WP. I have a page there too now. No idea if it’s benefitted book sales, but I like the site.
Goodreads’ recommendations are just too weird. I think they base them on what one’s friends or followers are reading, so they’re often wildly different from the “because you liked” book. Sometimes they’re so different it’s funny!

Shepherd is one of my favorite book sites. I, too, much prefer it to Goodreads. Great list you’ve put together. 🙂

I’m ashamed to say I’m very new to Shepherd. I think I’ve been squatting under a rock for a while.
I sweated blood over which of my favourites to leave out. That’s the only hard part. I’m glad you liked the ones I finally settled on. 😀
Btw do you have a list? Maybe we should have a Shepherd party. 😀

I don’t have a list there yet. I’m not sure I could limit myself to five books on anything. 😀

Never know which bandwagons to climb on. Will check it out, but the possibility of getting readers that way seems remote. Please post if it works for you, and I can give it a tiny bit wider distribution.
As with anything, if READERS don’t like it, it won’t go anywhere.
I’ve found good reviewers on GR – but it is an incredible amount of work and takes a LOT of my time to approach potential ones, and only works about half the time.

For me, the problem with Goodreads was that few people like the kind of books I like. Can’t really expect them to like mine in that kind of situation.

I think I’m in a huge category, except that they usually don’t read indie.
At least the SFF readers are very comfortable with reading self-published authors. I hope you find huge groups of them to attract into your orbit.

To be honest, I haven’t looked at Goodreads for years. Last time I went looking for scifi books to read, everything was scifi-romance. I remember one was a romance between a woman and a blue skinned, anatomically correct, feels-lust-and-can-fall-in-love type….robot. I gave up.

I’m liking Shepherd more and more. I know this is blasphemy but…I’ve never liked Goodreads, and I’ve never found books /through/ GR. It’s clunky and outdated. By contrast, Shepherd almost reads my mind, and everything works smoothly.
lol – I’m a convert. 😀

I’ve had a little poke around, Meeks, enough to know that it is a site I will enjoy. It’s a long time since I read Dune; maybe it is time for a reread.
