My thanks to Matthew Wright for the link to this incredible video. Coincidentally, Matthew appears in the video too, helping to explain how something as simple, as real world as water can be used to create a mechanical model of what makes our world go round…money.
I am the kind of person who always has to know why things are the way they are so my interests range from genetics and biology to politics and what makes people tick.
For fun I play online mmorpgs, read, listen to a music, dance when I get the chance and landscape my rather large block.
Work is writing. When a story I am working on is going well I'm on cloud nine. On bad days I go out and dig big holes...

Love it! Terry Pratchett used the concept in one of his fantasy books, MAKING MONEY. The geek in me bows to the geek in you, in gratitude for learning this is A REAL THING.
It’s such a cool machine! I produced and organised the video – I had a budget, hired a director and film-crew etc. The director wanted makeup on everybody, to which I discovered I was allergic which is why I ended up looking like Count Dracula… Ahem. Anyhow, I also co-wrote a paper (with an economist colleague) on the background of the MONIAC and how it worked, here: https://www.rbnz.govt.nz/hub/publications/bulletin/2007/rbb2007-70-04-04
How appropriate that an historian should play a part in the making, or at least saving of history. 🙂
Btw I love how the website provides dual language access. Wish we had something similar here.
