Over the last, almost three years, we’ve learned that Covid-19 is capable of changing rapidly and blowing through our immunity, whether natural or vaccine induced. This means we can’t expect ‘herd immunity’ to kick in and finally cause the virus to die out. So how do we get rid of it? Is it even possible?
A new study detailed in this New Atlas article makes me cautiously optimistic. Apparently, researchers have discovered an ‘epitope’ that stays pretty much the same across all the mutations up to BA.1 and BA.2. It may also stay the same for BA.4 and BA.5, the two variants we’re battling at the moment, but the research is lagging a bit behind on them.
Essentially what this means is that there may be an area of vulnerability on the virus that doesn’t change every five minutes. If a suitable vaccine can be created to target that vulnerability then scientists may have found the ‘master key’ to all variants.
But… The thing with fast moving mutations is that blocking off this ‘master vulnerability’ could make a hitherto unproductive mutation become productive, by default. This hypothetical mutation could make it easier for the virus to infect frogs or cats or some other host. If that’s the case, it could simmer in a different environment and possibly cross-over again at a later date. Or…best case scenario, it could settle into an animal host and stay there.
Either way, I’ve got all my fingers and toes crossed that science does find a ‘master key’ against Covid because I really would like to see friends and family in the flesh again.
cheers,
Meeks

I’m always interesting in such news but have stopped putting any faith in it. The much touted vaccines and herd immunity were less effective at stopping the spread than physical personal preventive measures which I agree are tiresome but in hindsight I wish I could have if possible been even more vigilant as while we’ve recovered, like Audrey the effects are lingering, and the thought of long COVID terrifies me as we already feel like it’s aged us at least 5 years at the moment with no idea if time will mend.

Oh Dale…I really am so sorry. I was hoping you guys would breeze through it. Knowing you, I know you’re both eating the healthiest food, and I’m sure that will help. Just take it easy, ok?

How fascinating, Andrea. It sounds promising, but then there are so many unknowns too. That’s a bit scary. I was kind of hoping that Covid would settle down into catchy “cold” that stops killing people. It’s been years of near isolation for some people, and like you, I want it to end. ā¤

Unfortunately, Covid has proved to have more tricks up its sleeve than anyone expected. Or perhaps we didn’t know as much as we thought we knew. Things will get better eventually. -sigh- Just have to stay patient.

My take from this post is that manmade interference could make the virus worse in the long-run. Am I wrong in that understanding?

lol – no! Or at least not in that way. The virus will keep on mutating no matter what we do or don’t do. As for that ‘master key’, they will test what happens if you neutralise it. If it’s obvious that it makes things worse, the research won’t be approved for a vaccine. But unexpected things /can/ happen. That’s all I was trying to say. š

Thanks Meeks, for the added commentary. I always like to understand things. It drives hubby mad.

It does Andrea…we still all mask up here but covid seems to not be the main focus now…although there are still cases and some people get quite severe symptoms …

Australia is such a mixed bag. Here in my state, shop assistants in my local chemist and IGA still mask up, but most of their customers do not. In NSW I don’t think many people wear masks at all. Such a simple thing that could save so many lives.

Thailand really has been ahead of the game right from the start. I share the whole crowd thing. Never liked crowds at the best of times. Now? I find myself literally detouring around people to avoid brushing against them or breathing their air, mask or no.

It finally got us a couple weeks ago. House guest who took a 5 hour flight to get here + 1 music concert + a couple of dinners at restaurants = Covid. I’ve pretty much recovered but I get tired easily and need a snooze every afternoon. My husband had a bad time with it; his doc told him today that if he hadn’t been double vaxxed and boosted, he probably would have ended up in hospital.
We’re supposed to get booster #2 next month.

Ugh…I’m so sorry Audrey! Thank god both you and your husband were vaxxed and boosted. I’m glad you had a ‘relatively’ mild dose but don’t get crazy. You don’t want to end up with long covid. -hugs-

That would be awesome!
The hubby and I had an early version of Covid in January of 2020 when we lived in the port city of Mazatlan. I was ill for a month. Weirdest illness ever!
