My desktop pc has been playing up for a while now, which is not that surprising as it’s over 5 years old, but it’s now gotten to the point where I can’t work around the problem any more. Ergo, the Beast is going to get a new hard drive. Until I get it back I’ll have to make do with my teeny tiny laptop…if it still works.
If I don’t answer your comments, it’s because the laptop curled up its toes from neglect. I’ll catch up with everyone when the Beast is back up and running.
cheers,
Meeks

Best of luck getting the beast up and running again, Andrea. I’m impressed that you know how to do that. π

Thanks, Diana, but I have a wonderful tech guy who does all the heavy lifting for me. One day though, I /am/ going to learn how to build my own…just not yet. π π π

Do you know, Meeks, I have never worked on a desktop computer. I have three laptops that I use, two ipads and two iphones.

-gasp- Seriously? Even at work????? I do have a teeny laptop but I hate it. Hate the tiny screen, hate the tiny keyboard and LOATHE the track ball/pad. I only use it when I have to go out to teach. Then I plug in a standard sized keyboard and a mouse.
I guess this is where the generational divide really bites.

Oh no! I have an Abraham. π That said, I asked him if he’d teach me how to build my own pc one day…when the pandemic is over. He said yes, so that will be a huge challenge some time in the future. π

-cough- lots of things scare me. My Dad had dementia for the last ten or so years of his life. Learning new things reassures me that I’m not heading that way, or at least not /yet/. Besides, I haven’t done it yet, have I? lol

I am sorry to hear that. My bil suffers that also and my sister is struggling with the same issues you are I suspect. My heart goes out to you.

Thank you. I don’t know if this works for everyone, but I found that reassuring Dad that his forgetfulness wasn’t that unusual helped to keep him on a more even keel. He still knew at some level, but mostly he stayed happy doing what he /could/ rather than panicking about what he’d lost.
That was just ‘mild’ dementia though, not Alzheimers. I hope it’s just dementia for your sister’s sake too. -hugs-

We all live in dread of this day, pity they aren’t clever enough to fix themselves, isn’t it?

lol – but then how could we have planned obsolescence? The global economy would crash. π
I would love a self-fixing anything. As all my appliances were 12 to 15 years old, I’ve had to replace so many over the last couple of years. I guess I should just be grateful they lasted as long as they did.

I’ve only ever used a Mac once, and that was…35 years ago. Hated it so never tried it again. To be honest, I hate Windows now too, but everything I use is on it, and if I ever go back to teaching, that’s what I’ll be teaching, otherwise I’d almost be tempted.

I have loved every single one of my Macs. Husband complains a lot about the random updatings of Windows on his PCs. I just smile and click. Am about to get a new shiny Airbook (?) with lots of memory and a fast processor – and a nice stable operating system. AND a better camera – so people will see me in high res (not necessarily a good thing). π

I proselytize not at all. Just describe my happiness since we bought our first personal computer, the Mac XL (a converted $10K Lisa with new Mac software and marketing that I still miss), and plunged into the future.
Maybe we’re kindred spirits somehow, but it has always been hand in glove for me (waldoes?).
Now I take any help I can get, and have been satisfied with every update. Windows terrifies me. YMMV

I can’t afford to spend energy on learning new things I don’t actually desperately need, so stability in my computing platform is very important.
Eldest daughter implied they’re ordering it THIS weekend, so I’m going to wait for it, if possible.
