The Offspring gave me a month’s subscription to Netflix for my birthday. [Don’t ask] The first thing I watched was a MAGNIFICENT movie called ‘Don’t Look Up’. It’s a movie about the end of the world, and I wish I could make everyone watch it.
If you get the chance, please watch this movie. It’s a mirror that shows how grotesque our world has become.
cheers,
Meeks

It’s not a ‘feel good’ movie. Not Hollywood at all, but I truly believe it is one of the most important movies of our times.

I loved that movie, Andrea! As weird as it sounds, I was glad everyone died in the end. No miracles, no supermen, no sudden last-minute solutions. What a great warning about climate change and the need to act before it’s too late.

Me too, Diana. I admit to feeling surprised when it happened – I really did expect there to be a last minute reprieve – but for once, Hollywood kept it real. Maybe that was DeCaprio’s doing? I know he’s passionate about the environment and climate change.

Tons of great actors too. I loved the super serious message embedded in the parody. Sadly, “the parody” is actually happening in the US. It’s so weird here.

I agree, it’s a mirror with a great big crack through the middle. The same thing is happening in all of the Western democracies, but not to the same extent. I really, truly hope we rethink this version of capitalism coz it ain’t working. I fear for democracy. 😦

Yeah, I know. It seems as if even the evidence of one’s own eyes is no longer enough to convince some people. We’re going through a reverse-Renaissance. 😦

I heard a great new report about young people having their heads on straight. We just need to hold out about 10 years until they’ve taken over as a voting block.

10 years…-sigh- Well, at least we’ll still be around when they do. It’s odd to think that we’re living through a real trough in human history. 😦

No kidding. There’s some talk here about a civil war. I don’t think it will happen, but OMG.

Ouch. Before Jan. 6 I would have said it simply wasn’t possible. Now I’m not so sure. I don’t really know what /other/ factors led to the civil war between the north and the south, but the polarization now seems very extreme. Let’s hope that post pandemic things will settle down a bit.

Fingers crossed, but I think its more about Trump and right-wing fear-mongering than the pandemic. This started in the 80’s with Reagan and has gotten worse every year. Remember Bush (20 years ago) started the Iraq war based on a lie of WMDs and people backed him because they were afraid. Ugh. This is all so dystopian and weird!

Mmm…as Matthew would say, that was about when neo-liberalism began. I do remember Reagan, and Bush, and they weren’t great, but in retrospect they seem almost benign.
If this is the end-game then it is Very dystopian. I used to think how luck my generation was not to have to live through a world war. I guess our luck ran out.

We’ll see. There are still more good people in the world who want peace and cooperation than psychos who want to destory everything. We just need to raise our voice and vote!

I used to believe that, Diana, but the last two years have dented my view of humanity. Or maybe that’s still a hangover from Twitter. Or maybe I’ve come to realise that all the good people I’ve met in RL and online are not ‘all there is’. I don’t know. I really don’t know.

The end of the world story is a common trope in science fiction movies because it appeals to the disaster aficionado in all of us. Slowly, steadily, the movie creeps on our sense of reality until we’re convinced it’s for real. The heart of darkness, and such a sound as will freeze the blood, fill the movie theater. It is time for the film to begin.

Welcome and…yes! As a scifi fan from way back, the premise of the story didn’t feel new, but the ending was, at least for a Hollywood type movie. I was very, very impressed. 🙂

Yes!!!! I was gobsmacked at all the parallels they snuck into the storyline. The ending though…that left me feeling gutted. Not the final, final ending, the ‘real’ ending. Best movie out of the US in decades. My respect for Leonardo DiCaprio has gone up again. Loved him in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape; love him in Don’t Look Up. 🙂

-grin- I stayed awake. 😉 To be honest I couldn’t have looked away if I tried. I kept trying to second guess who or what was being parodied all the way through. I think I’ll have to watch it again just to see the bits I missed the first time around. Do you think the Meryl Streep character was meant to Trump? I did see a photo of what looked like Streep with Bill Clinton, but the character seemed to ‘dumb’ to be Hilary?

I thought the script was pretty good; very sharp writing and that always makes something watchable. Squid Game is really violent but a fabulous critique of our prehistoric capitalist paradise. Also, if you enjoy true crime, Narcos is another well-written show 🙂

Yes, it can be tough, so it needs a bit of discipline, e.g. I will only let myself watch something when I’ve written a minimum 500 words that day. But when that happens, I usually just keep writing 🙂
