I’m not talking about your common, garden variety mosquito bite here. I’m talking about the kind of bite that becomes swollen and red and itches more than you thought possible. The kind of bite that drives you crazy.
Two days ago, I was working in the garden, pulling weeds from one of the flowerbeds when I felt a couple of stings. One was inside my gardening glove, and I think it was an ant. The other three were one my torso, and I have no idea what bit me, or how. I took an anti-histamine when I went inside and it seemed to be okay. By the next day, however, all the bites had turned nasty.
I tried vinegar, my normal go-to, but it only eased the itch for a short time.
Then I tried making a paste out of bi-carb and spreading it over the bites. It did work for a while, but once the paste dried the itch returned, plus I was covered in dried bi-carb powder.
By this time, I’d taken Telfast during the day and Polaramine at night, but nothing much was working. In desperation I looked up cures for ant bites and found a post that recommended placing something cold on the bite…
It worked!
That first moment when the cold pack touched bare skin was pretty intense, but after that the itch disappeared like magic.
It’s not a permanent cure, but each time you do it, the angry, swollen flesh around the bite shrinks a little more. And it doesn’t make a mess, or smell like fish-‘n-chips. π
Later me lovelies. Time to do some more gardening.

Cortisone. But I’ll have to try that cold-trick next time too.

My Dad used to get bad dermatitis and the GP wrote him a script for a cream that contained cortisone. I actually tried it on me insect bites, and it didn’t seem to do much for the itching. Definitely give the cold pack a try. I was shocked by how well it worked.

Bracken? I had no idea bracken had an medicinal properties. Thanks for that, Dale. I’ll squirrel that bit of info away for future reference. π

Super tip, Andrea. It’s amazing how many remedies are out there that are quite simple. (That the pharmaceutical companies wish we didn’t know about). Glad your bites are getting better. π

-grin- so true! I’ve bought stuff that’s meant to make the itch go away, but it never does. A simple cold pack cost me nothing and got rid of them in a day and a bit. π

I wish I knew more of these remedies. We have lots of stinging nettles here, which I get into all the time. The instant cure is to rub the area with fern leaves! For some reason, every time I think of that, it makes my happy. π

Fern leaves? That’s interesting. Do the two plants grow near each other? Or do you have ferns in pots? I’m not sure what kind of nasties we have here in Warrandyte, but there are a few that catch onto your clothing as if they’d invented velcro. The poor dog often comes in trailing the stuff from her fluffy tail.

They grow very near each other. Isn’t that cool? The remedy right next to the stinging plant.

Commiserations. π¦ Not sure if the cold treatment is as effective on mozzie bites but it’s worth a try. Good luck. They love me too. π¦

Yeah, the little beasties seem to like some of us more than others. π¦ Btw, I’m feeling 80% better today so the cold treatment really has worked.

We have some aloe growing but it’s not the ‘good’ one. I really should just buy one and plant. Thanks for the tip, Carol. π

Good to hear those bites are less bothersome after the cold treatment. I hope they clear up soon.

Thanks for this post, Meeks. I have made a note of your advice. I am allergic to all insect bites including mosquito bites. They come up as huge itching mounds that drive me nuts.

Aaaah! I suspect I may be allergic to the little blighters as well – ‘huge itching mounds’. π¦
Carol suggested fresh aloe vera. Do try the cold pack though. It’s instant.

I love ice cold water because if I get the spot I just burned into cold water for five minutes immediately, I don’t even remember later that I burned myself (small burns, obviously). Cold is impressive – glad it helped you.

Yes! I do that with burns too. The cold pack doesn’t have to go into the freezer by the way. Just fridge cold is fine.

I just pop an ice cube or two in a glass of water, and keep that finger in the water for about 5 minutes. A cold pack is too much pre-planning for me. And I rarely burn myself, being a lot more careful now, but it’s amazing how well it works.

lol – before this pandemic, I’d cleaned out my freezer and turned it off, so I had no cold packs. Now I do. Serendipity. π I have to say that after using the cold treatment off and on yesterday, I’m feeling miles better today. This is one I’m going to remember. π
