Not so long ago, I complained about the timeline in Vokhtah being out by three days. After a LOT of time and effort, which included combing through book 1 to see exactly what I happened when, I discovered that the timeline was actually out by 17 days. -pulls hair and screams-
The problem with the timeline goes all the way back to the very start of the book in which I guestimated that the journey to and from Deepwater gather would take about 50 days. As guestimates go, that fudge would not have been catastrophic had I gone back at the end of the book and worked out exact times spent. But I didn’t. ๐ฆ
I solved my timeline problem, but it’s left me very wary of any and all fudges, so when I went back to book 2 and came across a scene that involved a bad iVokh rappelling down into a ravine to chase a good iVokh, my fudge-alarm went off straight away.
Why? Because everything I know about mountaineering comes from a couple of old Hollywood movies. I think one of them starred Sylvestre Stallone:
Clearly, I could not allow the fudge to stand, so I’ve spent most of today doing research on mountaineering. To my utter surprise, the scene I wrote is actually possible using a method invented way back at the start of the 20th century by a climber called Hans Dulfer.
To use the Dulfersitz, [I think that translates as Dulfer-sit] you secure one end of the rope at the top of the cliff or wherever you happen to be, wrap it around your body a certain way, and then ‘walk down’ the near vertical face of the cliff suspended only by the friction of the rope against your body:

You can see exactly how to do the wrapping in the short video from which the still shot was taken: https://youtu.be/CLQ0IltdYd0 While revolutionary for its time, the Dulfersitz was not exactly painfree:
‘For quite a long time the Dรผlfersitz was the most common way of abseiling and itโs still remembered today, mainly with nostalgic memories of those gorgeous burns on the right side of your neck and shoulder along with some far less pleasant ones right next to your genitalia.’

As I don’t particularly care if the bad iVokh gets highly painful rope burn, I’m more than happy to use the Dulfersitz method. One fudge down, yay! ๐

This is exactly what happens to me, Meeks. I think, oh, I’d better check if this is possible and how one would do it. Next minute, I’ve done three hours of research for 1 paragraph of writing.

lmao! Oh yes, yes, yes! And sometimes in the final edit the research disappears altogether. But it’s such fun isn’t it? I always feel revitalized after going info. hunting. ๐

It is and even if most of it goes into providing the flavour of the novel, it is important.

You’ve put your finger on it, Robbie. Every word we use in our writing is /chosen/ and adds some kind of subtle nuance to the overall narrative. Even if the reader doesn’t know why we choose one thing over another, we do…and it shows. ๐

You are brave to do so much research but I suppose it gives you the confidence of knowing your story is sound. My son is a bit of a mountaineering expert (climbing at least) so let me know if I can pick his brain for any details!

Gah!!!!! I wish I’d written this post earlier coz I really could have used the help. I get vertigo climbing on a chair so probably won’t write any more mountaineering scenes but I won’t forget your very kind offer [on his behalf. :D].

Yay YouTube! ๐ … any bloke using that would have to make sure the family jewels were well out of the way before they leaned into that ‘harness’. ๐
Well done on clearing the fudge-y logjam. ๐

-giggles- yes, that thought occurred to me too. In fact I was wondering if any of them wear one of those cup things that cricketers wear!

Ha. Yes, friction is an amazing way to belay and repel, but it can burn badly. The trick is to guard the areas where the rope slides. Your iVokh may be able to rig something, but if you don’t mind the burns, you’re all set!

Luckily the iVokh hide is like ‘leather’ so a bit of a burn will be unpleasant but not debilitating. ๐

Ha Ha as long as oneof your characters doesn’t credir Mr Sulfersitz and his methods. I’m not sure any books about this would ave reached the far side of the Galaxy. Hugs

I spent part of my day watching a bunch of Youtube videos about a particular movie award ceremony in 2006 – because I’m going to insert a character into it, and wanted whatever details might make it more real so I can write it.
I was a bit stuck before watching them, and now am unstuck – because it is possible to do what I want.
You had the same experience – it’s the good kind that comes from research. I think it’s authors taking care and precision with their workd.

High Five! As authors we have to be generalists who know a little about a lot of things, but then we also have to delve deep at times. One of my favourite parts about writing. ๐
