In a recent post, I wrote about my search for a screen capture app and showed you two short videos I made using Bandicam. Unfortunately, I soon discovered that I was not using a free app. I was using a demo version with severe limitations. I was tempted to buy the app, but the price was a little too high for my liking.
After some more searching, I discovered RecMaster which combines dead easy screen capture with a [very] basic video editor. I bought a year’s subscription for $19.99 USD and made a video…but when I inserted it into this post, I was horrified by how hard it was to read!
The problem is two fold. First, the default Windows fonts used in titles and menus are so small that when you reduce them even further to a standard video format, they become impossible to read. Then I discovered that WordPress makes them even smaller. Vimeo does have a fullscreen setting:

But I worried that people would not know to turn it on. So I fiddled with the Windows screen settings. They are now much too big for normal use, but they’re just about right for a video…on Youtube. Here on WordPress, the size is still impossibly small.
I was going to update all my how-to posts, especially the self-publishing ones, by adding videos of important bits, but now I’m not sure I’ll bother. Or maybe I’ll bite the bullet and get a Youtube account.
Do you use the fullscreen mode in either Youtube or Vimeo? Is it more trouble than it’s worth? Should I keep experimenting and make the default Windows fonts even bigger?
Anyway, the video below was recorded using the larger fonts. To me it’s still horribly squint-worthy. What do you think. Please be honest as I don’t want to waste my time making videos that no one will watch.
Many thanks,
Meeks

You got this. 😀 … for the couple of video’s I created last year when we were on holiday, I simply uploaded them to YouTube then embedded them in a blog post. Easy-peasy. 🙂

Yeah, I can do say, gaming videos, fairly easily but making the Word Ribbon readable has been a headache. Just ordered a cheapo microphone so I can do ‘explanations’ while I point at things. 😀

I almost always use fullscreen when watching a video. Yours was indeed quite squint-worthy in the blog, but as soon as I went to fullscreen, it was perfect! Stay with it … you’ll find ways of perfecting it the more you work with it. Good job!

Ah now that’s good to know. I usually watch how-to videos on Youtube and the size of the screen is about 2 inches wider. Word still looks unreadable, but not quite as much. Thanks for letting me know, Jill. Have a great weekend.

I watch everything full screen because I need the closed captioning on such things as YouTube videos or movies. But it’s such a habit that I automatically hit the button, even on emails and such. The weekend is nigh over now, but it was peaceful … these days, that’s all I ask! 😉

The last video was fine in full screen. Would totally work for me. I’m impressed by your approach to all this.

Thanks Audrey. Once I get hooked on something I’m like a dog with a bone. 🙂 Speaking of, I bit the bullet and signed up for a youtube account this evening. Now if only I could find a WordPress theme that was better with videos. I did see one in an article I found, but do you think I could find it amongst the WP themes?
-bangs head on keyboard- and there is no search function for theme ‘name’. -bangs head some more-
Anyway, this dog is going to be. Night night. 🙂

Vimeo works ok for me but similar to other comments I usally go to YouTube. Sounds like a lot of work to redo your how-to’s but if you think there’s click potential then maybe you could earn $ via YouTube… not sure if that’s possible via Vimeo.

I hadn’t actually thought of earning any money via youtube, but that’s definitely an idea to purpose. At this point I’d be happy to gain a new audience. To be honest, my deep distrust of both Facebook and Google have cut me off from a lot of the ‘normal’ marketing channels. -sigh-

I love the way you play with tech, Andrea. You’re fearless. Well done, my friend, but so over my head. Lol. Hugs.

Bah and humbug!!! 😀 Seriously, what you do with powerpoint astounds me, and I actually do know how to use PP, at least to a point. RecMaster is very much an entry level app and I can already see the need to upgrade to a better editor at some point, assuming I continue with this. Thanks for the vote of confidence though. -hugs-

It had never occurred to this silly old ape that Vimeo had a full screen option, like YouTube, until you mentioned it, Meeks 🙄
Your videos seemed clear enough to me on my iPad, however watching it on a screen larger than a tablet would be better.

Hah! I didn’t realise that funny icon was for full screen either until I started mousing around in desperation. We both learned something. 🙂
I’m glad you could see it on the tablet.

The last video is fine at full-screen, but then that, I think, is a requirement because of what you’re showing. It’s detail-specific so needs to be watched on a larger screen 🙂

Yup. That was my thinking too. I’ve checked out a few youtube how-to videos [for Windows stuff] and the size of the screen is definitely bigger. Learning curve, learning curve.

I’m not your standard demographic, nor your target audience, but for what it’s worth I only use YouTube vids for craft tutorials, never Vimeo (don’t think that’s a big thing over here; I much prefer a written guide for everything.

Thanks Dawn. Truth is I go to Youtube for craft and howto stuff as well. I guess I’ll have to get off my high horse and just get an account. I’ll tell myself it wasn’t always owned by google.
