Forgive the grandiose title, but I’ve just read an article on Medium that details the current research aimed at creating a computer-brain interface. And that concept, taken to an extreme level, is precisely what Innerscape is all about.
I’ve known about some of the technologies for some time, but I was truly surprised by how much, and how varied, those technologies are. Some are clearly still in their infancy, but I see great potential for others…including football fans. 🙂
No, I’m not kidding. The article below contains a video about a very special ‘kickoff’. The person doing the kickoff [first kick of the game] is wearing an exoskeleton, and he’s paralyzed. He’s moving the exoskeleton with his brain. That is little short of a miracle.
You can watch a video of that kickoff, and read about the other technologies in development here: https://medium.com/predict/brain-computer-interfaces-the-next-step-in-human-evolution-a0e0723a1791
One thing I very much like about the article is that it talks openly about the elephant in the room – the ethics of some of these technologies. We humans have a habit of jumping into new tech feet first, so enamoured of the potential for good [or profit] that we wilfully ignore the potential for harm. And there is always potential for harm.
It’s Good Friday here in Australia so I’ll wish you all a Safe and Happy Easter if you celebrate it. If not, may you have a Safe and Happy Holiday.
Much love,
Meeks

I suppose the real issue, Meeks, is that so many people don’t have any morals or ethics when it comes to something that could make them a lot of money. A sad state of affairs.

Yes. I know I’m generalising a heck of a lot, but it seems to me that the people who do live according to their morals do NOT go in for politics and rarely want to become CEOs of multinational companies. Instead it’s the, dare I say it? least scrupulous and most ambitious who crave that sort of power.
In effect, our societies reward bad behaviour. 😦

Well, yes, that is exactly right, Meeks. You can say it to me. I have worked in corporate for over 20 years.

Before my marriage, I worked in corporate too. Some places and people were nice, but they were not the ones who progressed up the corporate ladder. My ex had his own small business and I became tech support. Never looked back.

This reminds me of the adage, ‘just because we can, doesn’t always mean we should’. 😀

Amen! Sadly, we often shouldn’t but do. 😦

When they started talking about not having fans at sporting events I immediately smelled a rat. If you take away the fans, why should you still have the players? CGI would be so much safer and more reliable.

I’m not a sports fan, but I live in a country that’s sports mad, so I’d have to say ‘it’s not the same?’
As for the financial rat – those matches are sold to broadcasters for probably more than a stadium full of fans would bring in. $$$

Of course, if you have the fans you’re getting the broadcast money plus the stadium money. But let’s be real, most professional sports teams are not strapped for cash. It’s always a good time when the billionaire team owners decide that they need a new stadium, and get taxes raised on everyone else to pay for it, but that’s a story for another day.

Yes, cry poor…all the way to the bank. Sadly sport has become big business. 😦

Fascinating and in a way unsurprising, Andrea. The brain is amazing, the leap is tapping that mysterious organ. And of course humans will find a way to use this technology for war as a first priority. Then the good stuff on the side. On that cheery note… Happy Easter. Lol. Hugs and love ❤ ❤ ❤

Dear Meeka,
I concur with Diana. Needless to say, I am enjoying your healthy dose of scepticism and reservation regarding “the current research aimed at creating a computer-brain interface”. Pushed to extremes, we can expect what might indeed happen in a few decades or less. In some of my posts, I have endeavoured to give a very good inkling of the kind of society that humans might be heading towards. Here is an entry in my cultural anthropology journal entitled “🎧 Facing the Noise & Music: Playgrounds for Biophobic Citizens 🏗🌁🗼”, published at https://soundeagle.wordpress.com/2013/03/02/facing-the-noise-music-playgrounds-for-biophobic-citizens/
As you can discover in the said post, there will be plenty of far-reaching ramifications in multiple domains of human life, some of which are irreversible.
May you enjoy your long Easter weekend!

You should publish a book, Soundeagle. Scifi is often a projection from now into the future.
Always fun, and sometimes thought provoking.

lol – you ye of brightness and light. :p Sadly, I have to agree with you. I cannot think of a single new discovery or invention that hasn’t been twisted into some kind of violence. Even 3D printing was used to make a -bleep-bleep-bleep- gun. I don’t know whether it’s because we’re so fearful of the ‘other’ or a simple case of chimp aggression. We definitely haven’t left the ape behind.
