My thanks to My OBT for another Aussie themed post. I had no idea these teensy weensy, peacock spiders existed, much less that they were native to Australia. If you can bear to look at the prettiest spiders in creation, the video below features these little guys ‘dancing’ to Staying Alive by the Bee Gees [another Aussie export]:
To see some more hilarious videos of these little guys, and to learn more about them, please visit the My OBT website: https://myonebeautifulthing.com/2020/12/23/peacock-spider/
Oh, and I’m scared of spiders too, but these little guys are the exception! Enjoy. 🙂

I know! I was blown away by how really, really pretty they are. Would would ever think you could call a spider pretty?

Magic. I don’t think these ones are venomous (except to insecta).

They are magic. 🙂 I think they’re so very small they wouldn’t be able to ‘bite’ even if they wanted to. 🙂

I think they’re in the same family as ‘jumping’ spiders. A new one was found in Sydney recently, and it was a beauty.

A great video, Meeks. I’m not scared of spiders, in fact I had a pet one when I was a girl. Matilda lived in the lamp for quite a while. I remember her well. I do respect that some are poisonous, of course. These ones are gorgeous. Such beauty in nature.

Dear Meeka and Roberta,
Since you are not afraid of spiders, you can find even more videos of the Peacock Spider (Maratus volans) at the comment section of my special post published at https://queenslandorchid.wordpress.com/2016/08/17/do-plants-and-insects-coevolve/
From memory, there are at least seven videos there, including Maratus splendens in New South Wales and Victoria, as well as Maratus speciosus, Maratus caeruleus, Maratus avibus and Maratus pardus in Western Australia.

Wow…this is a whole dissertation. Fabulous work but some of the images were missing? Maybe the links were moved?
Hope you have a safe and happy Christmas SoundEagle. 🙂

I shall try to fix the links next year, as I have been too busy.
Meeka, I wonder why you no longer bother to visit, like and comment on any of my posts and pages for many months. What happened?

Hmm…I’m not getting notifications, SoundEagle. I’ll have to check my WordPress settings but I’ve noticed over the years that sometimes when people go ‘silent’ it’s because something has been reset. 😦

-shudder- You’re a hell of a lot braver than me. I can’t imagine having a spider as a pet. I’ve become less of a wuss over the years, but I still don’t ‘like’ them. Well, except for these little guys. 🙂

Hilarious video! I was bitten by a spider once – the bite got infected and I ended up on antibiotics for months afterwards. My doctor said the problem was the bacteria that live in spider mandibles.

Gah…I take it you’re not fond of spiders then? Just excuse me while I grab the vacuum and get rid of those cobwebs…

Are they poisonous? Eeeek! I am blind, so cant see them, but spiders scare me even though I cant see them! Especially australian ones hahaha!

Hi Carol Anne. I don’t think they’re poisonous, or at least not to /us/. They are truly gorgeous though. I have no idea how they do it, but they raise their back bit to look like a peacock’s tail feathers…and it is beautifully coloured. Truly amazing.
