Do I really need to spell out what this last pic is about? Mwahahahaha!
I bought all of these pretties from the little Vietnamese bakery in the Research shops [right down the end near the roundabout]. I was really impressed by the plastic screen installed in front of the cash register and the restraint of the two guys behind me. One was just inside the door – well over 2 metres from me. The second was outside the door, a safe distance from customer no. 1. And we were ALL wearing masks.

lmao! Kindred spirit. ๐ I cannot tell you how wonderful this bread tastes. And we’ve made a most unexpected discovery: it defrosts beautifully! I thought I’d have to pop the defrosted bread in the oven for a minute or two…to ‘freshen it up’. But…the inside was just as light and fluffy as before AND…the crust was crunchy. Can you believe that?

They are. The jam donots are gone, as is 3/4 of one loaf. The rest have gone into the freezer. They won’t be as delicious thawed, but I pop them in the oven for a few minutes and they’re almost as good. ๐

Things are quite strict here, but I don’t mind. I cycle to the office mainly to try to keep fit which will only work until the snow arrives. Have been tardy with the blog too as I’d rather keep going with the next book… Hope you’re writing over there, my dear ๐

That’s good news, Chris. Strict may not be fun, but it works, something far too many Western countries can’t, or won’t, accept.
I haven’t written a word in weeks, or done much on the blog either, because I’ve been getting my block fire ready. Honestly? I’m so tired every day, I fall into bed and barely have the energy to read for a minute or two. Hoping I’ll have things fully prepped before xmas. After that it’ll just be maintenance and hopefully I’ll be able to get back to writing.

yup, the sweet wobbly stuff. Jelly is clear, while Jam is cooked fruit that isn’t strained, also called preserves.

Wait…now I really am confused. So jelly is the same jelly we think of? With no fruit in it at all?
We call anything that’s been preserved a ‘preserve’. E.g. compote, tomatoes, vegetables etc. language really is bizarre.

There was an old song that goes: “it must be jelly, ’cause jam don’t shake like that’…” (referring to a girl dancing.) ‘Preserves’ and refers to fruit cooked then allowed to gel without straining. Jelly is clear. Do you have Jell-O brand dessert. (I find that I have a lot to say about jelly/jam…been saving up a blog for years.) ๐

Mmm…we /do/ have packet jellies that turn into a wibbly wobbly desert. But…I’ve read of people having a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I assumed that meant PB and /jam/. How do you get a jelly to stay in a sandwich?

Scott, who is an expert on such matters, just advised: you put peanut butter on both sides of the bread, then spread jelly in between. The peanut butter keeps the jelly from seeping through and gumming up the bread.

Scott’s sister, Dau1, is opposed to jelly in the middle…so I guess its an international thing. I just spread jelly or (usually) jam on one slice of bread, and the peanut butter on the other.

Jell-O is still a favorite dessert…and we also use it for salads. Lime jello with crush pineapple and grated carrots…very festive! (Some people add little marshmallows to both the salad or the dessert. Red Jello with fruit cocktail; Jello made with less water makes a substance that can be cut into squares and even eaten with the fingers. as a snack. Whip Jello when it is nearly set and mix in whipped cream or Cool-Whip. Yummy! I even like to put milk on the jello chunks and eat that…but that’s just me. ๐

So your jello really is like our jelly! Actually, an Australian neighbour from my childhood used to make that whipped jelly dessert. She called it a ‘flummery’. We always thought it was a very ‘English’ kind of thing, but I loved it.

Jello-O is a name brand of gelatin dessert. There are other brands, and plain gelatin powder has its own uses. I never did anything with it but make Jell-O. I have heard the word “flummery” but not sure of the context. That whipped jelly is yummy, as I remember it, nice and creamy almost like yogurt. I should make some…

I just googled (actually used “bing”) to search the word “flummery.” Zounds! as we used to say in high school! Such a treasury of yummies right out of the King’s English Cookbook. I made that up, I have no idea if there is really a KEC Cookbook. All about Flummeries…figgy puddings…Christmas Puddings…plum puddings…oh my! My Englishness seeps out now and then, My mouth is watering! yikes Upon some thought, I suspect a lot of flummery (pun intended, I hear its a cuss-word of sorts too.) comes from our English settler heritage…

I have a love/hate relationship with xmas as well. I used to love it when the Offspring was little, but now that all the kids are grown up it’s just…another day but with more housework and a better dessert.

One year I had $25 total to spend on Christmas for my little kids, from a baby to a nine-year-old. I actually succeeded, thanks to mid-60s prices and Barbie dolls, coloring books and crayons, little toys for the four others who were under age 5. We also made tree decorations and the like. I did a lot of sewing then anyway, so I made doll clothes, etc.
