I’d like to wish all Americans the very best for the future under the leadership of the 46th President of the United States.
You have a lot to be proud of. You’ve broken voting records despite Covid-19. You’ve elected a Woman as your Vice President, and that woman is Asian-African-American. Most importantly, however, you’ve shown that democracy is not dead. The rest of the democratic world salutes you.
The road ahead won’t be easy, but I hope that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris really will care for all Americans, not just those who voted for them. Americans of both persuasions have to learn to like each other again. Or at the very least, to show compassion and justice towards each other. Without compassion and justice, there is no glue to hold society together.
Kind regards from Australia,
Meeks

My heart is breaking for our American brothers and sisters this Thanksgiving weekend. So much heartache for all the people they have lost.

Yes, not much to be thankful for, and even less if the celebrations go ahead. The numbers are already so big we can’t truly comprehend them. How big will they be as a result of Thanksgiving? 😦

Thanks, Andrea. Such a relief to know that the US has a chance to move forward into a kinder, more truthful future. It’s not going to be easy. The divides are huge. The US majority has spoken, but there are 70 million Americans who voted for Trump, and their legitimate economic concerns have to be addressed. I’m going to start the year with hope. ❤

Yes, 70 million Americans can’t be left out in the cold or things will get worse, not better.
Isn’t it funny that after this awful year, there’s finally some hope near the /end/ of it?

I hope so too. I suspect Biden will be able to deal with a hostile Senate, if necessary, but ultimately it’s the people who will make or break his presidency. Fingers crossed. 🙂

I have a strong feeling that the incumbents in Canberra will now have very little choice. China, Japan, the US, all establishing ambitious targets means our dirty coal will have no where to go. If we don’t transition away from the /dependence/ on coal quickly, we will become the ‘poor man of Asia’.

I hope so too, Carol. Sadly I think Biden and Harris are going to face an uphill battle to implement their policies, especially re Covid19. I fear it really has gone too far to be brought under control. But there is always hope.

I think you may be right we haven’t back of the unrest which in my opinion Trump could stop all that by doing the right thing and be gracious in defeat which is befitting of a President however he is behaving like a spoilt petulant child…

Do they ever. 😦 It’s like a tangle ball of string – which end do you pull? Without healing, the people on whom Covid-19 compliance depends…simply won’t comply. And then there’s the Senate. Even as an outsider I can see how hard it will be. And yet, the US does have a history of doing amazing things when it decides to accomplish something. I hope 2020-2021 will be the start of something amazing.

The ‘race’ has been incredibly scary. And the near future is going to be a total mess.
The ugliness on the right has reached incredible heights. The rest of us seem to have mostly protested peacefully, and without guns. There is work to be done so this doesn’t happen again in four years.
Hope Biden is in good shape, manages as he hopes he will, and is able to do a run around the Senate, and the Supreme Court, and all the 45 appointees, and the destroyed…
The over 40% who voted for 45 are still there, still alive, still rabidly hateful, still against anyone not exactly like themselves. I haven’t seen that much gloating from the winning side (assuming the legal challenges lose), but the other side has just had its access removed, and we have work to do to understand and counteract their willingness to follow a demagogue.

I read recently that the reason Germany and Japan became US allies post WWII was because the US helped both countries recover instead of punishing them further [as happened to Germany after WWI].
I doubt that any amount of kindness will change the hearts and minds of the current generation of Trump voters, but it may work on miracle on their children and children’s children. Change has to be both far reaching and permanent. I truly hope Biden and Harris have what it takes to at least start that process.

Agreed. Healthcare for all would really help. Obama tried – and the Senate, led by Republican McConnell, wouldn’t even let legislation get put to the vote.
Rural folk might do better if they had available healthcare for their families.
The results of WWI caused WWII.

Yes, I’ve never understood why so many potential beneficiaries of decent healthcare appear to fear it so much. It’s not ‘communism’!
Perhaps if Trump’s people start to feel a few of the benefits, they’ll be less hostile.
And yes, WWII was very much the result of the punishment of Germany post WWI. The world learned a valuable lesson then. Let’s hope Biden-Harris can persuade their base that punishment is not in their best interests either.

Thank you, my friend! There will be many problems in the days ahead, but our voices have been heard and perhaps now we can begin to undo some of the damage that’s been done over the past four years and hopefully begin to repair the divisiveness that is tearing this nation apart.
