I’ve just found this track by Harry Lightfoot, and it fits the mood of what I’m writing perfectly:
I know music is intensely personal, but do you have music in your life? To write to? To dance to? To just hum along to?
cheers

I enjoy many types of music. Sadly, although I love it, I find music overly distracting while writing.

Ah. I’ve had a lot of people say the same thing. To be honest, when I first started writing fiction I couldn’t understand how others could write /with/ music. Then, I hit a block and in desperation I gave music a try. It worked, and I’ve been writing to music ever since. Now it’s both an emotional ‘conduit’ and white noise, all at the same time. The human brain is a curious thing. π

The piece does have that dramatic feel to it doesn’t it? I just found a great quote by Leo Tolstoy.
“Music is the shorthand of emotion”.
One of my English teachers used to talk about “”sympathetic backgrounds.”
It was in particular reference to the description of the storm scene in ‘Far From The Madding Crowd.’ Perhaps music may also be part of a sympathetic background. At times like these I normally resort to heavy metal. For me there is an ACDC vibe about today.

Oh I love that quote. Thank you! I’ve always felt that music cut through all the frontal cortex stuff to get at the emotions that drive us all. Very powerful. lol hope you enjoyed the boyz. π

I have an enormous range of music in my ‘likes’ – everything from classical to jazz to synth-pop, metal, rock and so on. The only exceptions are country. And western. For me the interesting thing is that all of it is just one corner of what is potentially ‘music’.

lol – I’m no fan of Country & Western either. And you’re right, what we like is just a drop in the ocean of what counts as music. I’d like to appreciate Eastern music but I think my ‘ear’ is too old to change its settings.
I grew up playing the piano where a note is a note is a note. My Dad, however, played the violin so I know how much variation there actually is between one ‘note’ and the next. Not always pleasant…

I was brought up on piano too. However, my synthesisers can be made to do the violin-style ‘glide’, which sounds very, very weird when rendered using a piano tone colour. (Mind you, some odd sounds have been got out of piano – I keep thinking Keith Jarrett, but the doyen was probably Frank Zappa who held the sustain pedal of his Bosendorfer down with a brick and got people to talk into the piano, thus generating resonance in the strings. The results ended up on ‘Civilization Phase III’ and were – er – quite unique.

Holy…???? That poor piano! Very innovative though.

I like this one even more. The “new age” instrumental pieces are often a bit too peaceful, and this one has some spark to it. Great for writing!

Agree completely. π My Muse is not as visual as yours but she? he? is every bit as bossy. I have no idea why one piece of music makes my muse light up and others don’t. I’ve just learned to do as I’m told. π

I tried getting tough with you-know-who, but the sulking and passive aggression just got to be too much. -sigh- Survival before valour.

Isn’t it interesting how some music suits writing a particular story? Words & music working together in a second, less common way…

Oh god yes. Was just saying to Diana that my subconscious [muse?] latches on to one piece of music and won’t settle for anything else. I have no conscious idea why but it works. It’s like the conduit to creativity keeps ‘moving’ so the music has to keep changing too.

Not usually. Tone deafness doesn’t help the mood which most people associate with music. I do like drums, though, tap-dancing, the rhythmic patterns of storms and waves.

Oh I’m so sorry that melodies don’t register, but I do know what you mean about rhythmic patterns. To me, a beautiful piece of music has to have both melody and a strong rhythm.
One of the most amazing live performances I’ve ever seen was decades ago when an African ensemble visited Melbourne. There may have been singing, but all I remember is the power of the drums. And the dancing that went with it. π
