The first frame of Dr John’s video is a photo of a bus in Sweden. It’s chock-a-block full, with everyone jammed up against everyone else. And no face masks either. Apparently the messaging about the virus is…laidback.
Bizarre and rather frightening. π¦
By contrast, I found the news from my state, Victoria, very heartening. It comes in a video from an Australian nurse that Dr John included in its entirety. The nurse is here in Melbourne, and she began with the news that our Premier, Daniel Andrews, is putting his foot down. Can’t tell you how happy that makes me.
You can also find the latest news about Victorian restrictions on the VicEmergency app. The app provides real time info on all threats from bushfires to storms etc. The virus info is under ‘Warnings’. If you don’t have the app. you can download it for free from the Google Playstore. Oh, and the Australian video is spliced in at around minute 11:45 of Dr John’s update:
The Offspring and I are well. In fact, we’ve been eating very well because of the need not to waste anything! The Offspring is making fruit deserts, and I’m making ‘No Knead Bread’ to reduce our dependence on outside sources. Friends and family seem to be doing much the same so I’m sure we’ll come out of this okay. I do fear for those who aren’t taking the threat seriously though. All I can say is #StayHome .
I hope all my online friends are safe and well. That means you. -hugs-

I still think we are pretty blessed. Australians need to stick together and support each other through these difficult times not point fingers.

In comparison to most of the rest of the world we are blessed. But we have to accept that we can’t go back to the way things were. Not for a while, maybe a long while. -sigh-

Meeka
I was glad you spoke up. Poor old Daniel Andrews took responsibility and of course the baying mob were there to point fingers. Experience has taught me that the boot may well be on the other foot in the future but whatever happens I would rather live under a leader who can take responsibility for his mistake and calmly get on with his job. Yes we may be doing it tough right now but I am proud of the way this situation is being handled.

Good to see your updates Meeks and that you and the Offspring are keeping well. Not much has changed for me, I’m a bit busier than usual keeping up social connections while physical distancing but I haven’t left the village for 2 weeks. The G.O. has been topping up our supplies when he does his mum’s weekly shopping. Bonus, no supermarket for me.

Looks like so any people are questioning the whole ‘commute to work at any cost’ mentality that used to be the norm in that distant time of 2019. π
Big hugs to you and … well, I don’t know the Offspring at all so … a friendly nod to Offspiring. π

I think we’re going to see a lot of things change once we’re on the other side of this pandemic, and working from home as a viable job option is right up there. I believe a UBI is on the card too. Maybe not straight away, but as a safety net for the future.
We live in ‘interesting’ times.

Canada’s been toying with something similar for a while, some provinces for it, some against it … but no-one really considered it seriously, those in power had too much to lose … but now they’re going to be shelling out billions in ‘support payments’, it might get moved to the ‘taken seriously’ pile.

I’m glad to hear you’re doing well. The US is finally starting to take this virus seriously as the cases and death toll mounts. I’m glad the health experts are being more graphic and scary about the dangers. Even Trump is starting to believe this just might be a problem. Enjoy your time with the offspring and take care, my friend.

We’re hearing bad things about New York and New Orleans. But at least Trump’s activated that Defence Act? If the US manufacturing machine started making things /for/ this pandemic, it would help. Maybe a lot. Fingers crossed that a /health/ rescue starts to happen soon.
I hope you and your family are safe and well. -hugs-

Trump activated the defense act but then didn’t do anything with it. Companies are making the changes on their own though, so a glimmer of hope. Be well.

Things will change, for sure, Andrea. This is going to change the US economy permanently. We’ll become a feudal state or more humane. Our choice.

At the risk of getting a bit political. Daniel Andrews is doing a great job, especially coming on top of the recent dreadful bushfire season. Same principles as I was taught about teaching. Better to start off tough then ease up, than have to do things the other way round.

Oh! I never thought of that. And yes, that’s exactly how I was taught to teach as well. Most people I know are very grateful to be living in Victoria, precisely because he gets things done. And he doesn’t waffle on and on and on… π

I am delighted to know you are coping well, Meeks. For me it is life as usual except I am working form home and chatting to colleagues via Teams or Skype instead of face-to-face. Honestly, I prefer it this way, so much more productive. Stay well and I am glad your government is doing the right thing.

Hi Robbie. It’s interesting you saying that you prefer to work from home. I suspect most creative types do. I miss not getting out for the odd latte, or a bit of window shopping, but now that food isn’t a constant worry, I’m kind of enjoying the enforced homestay as well.

We’re halfway across the US, so there’s that. Our area is about a week or so behind NY, and we put the shelter in place order in around the same time they did. Buys us time.
But so many states did nothing. It’s going to get a whole lot worse here before it gets better.
I am so angry with the lack of leadership here. And I still don;t understand why the department of defense is not coordinating PPE, ventilators, etc. This is the time they can actually defend us and save American lives.

I’m glad you have things in hand, at least where you are. Different states are doing different things here as well, and our Federal leadership is about as effective as yours.
Let’s hope the states do a better job.
