This is a quick update about one of the myTax questions that I mentioned in this post. It was one of the questions I ‘guessed’.
The question occurs in the section under PSI, or Personal Services Income, and asks for the:
‘Number of business activities’
Nowhere on the ATO website is there a definition of what ‘business activity’ actually means. Thanks to the very knowledgeable and patient lady I spoke to this morning, I can now tell you that for Sole Traders, the question refers to the number of people/companies you have worked for.
So, for example, if you work for ten different people/companies during the course of a financial year, the number of ‘business activities’ to report is…tah dah…10!
You’re welcome. π

having come from a local government background I fully get the ‘explaining to experts’ issue / trap – I worked my way through from counter staff to middle management, so became reasonably proficient at explaining complex legislation and thinking to all strata. (I’m particularly proud of the way I would, at staff induction, define the loss of subsidy,if we exceeded a certain level as a pint of beer – the beer (yum) the head (necessary but annoying) spillage if over filled (wasteful). Worked every time, if I had a real life example and the financial figures. Course I’m out of practice now, as you can see!!
The easiest explanations were always to people who knew they weren’t experts – new benefit applicants, for example. The most challenging explanations were to external audit and heads of service.
My department head called explaining to people (ie HoS) who thought they were too good / smart to require an explanation ‘chimplifying’ . It got us through many a tough day of justifying a time consuming and process heavy method to those who wielded the power of the staffing budget. The upside is that I’d have guessed correctly at that definition π

LOLOlololol! Love the beer analogy and the ‘too smart to read the manual’. π Back when I was doing tech support, it was a standing joke that no one ever read the manual. -hugs-

At least you were able to get a definition. I can see it would be impossible to come up with a number for something when you weren’t sure what that something is.

lol – exactly! Just between you and me, the very nice lady hinted that I was not the only one to ask that question. I feel so much better now. π

Just ordered my forms from IRS.gov–now the trick is to figure out how to fill them out once they arrive… Oh, I wish I could pay someone (anyone competent) else to do it. π Happy Holidays and best wishes with your taxes and everything else the holidays and new year bring. HUGS! xo

Commiserations, Bette! I know just how you feel. One day ‘they’ will come up with an easy way of doing tax returns and we’ll all die of shock.
All the best for the festive season to you and yours. π
