I’m hosting an un-christmas tomorrow so busy cleaning and cooking, but all work and no play is boring, right? So I did a quick jigsaw puzzle of a fox. Note the eyes:

Those slit pupils sent me off on a search of the internet where I discovered that fox vision allows them to hunt at dawn and dusk…much like cats. But foxes are related to dogs and wolves. What gives?
The similarities between foxes and cats doesn’t end there. You can find a host of fascinating facts in the article below:

One of those facts is illustrated in the following video:
Okay, well play time is over, got floors to mop… -sigh-… Enjoy your weekend. I’ll have food pics tomorrow 🙂
Cheers

Interesting! I like foxes and see them so rarely. I’ll be thinking of you as you mop today. My cleaning day is Thursday.

I hosted a family un-christmas yesterday, hence the cleaning. I was going to take pics of the feast but forgot. We have leftovers but it’s not quite the same. lol

Thank you! It was. 🙂 Still one or two pots to wash but otherwise the house is back to normal. The guests included two little boys – 5 and 2.5 ish. Huge fun. Their cheeky smiles are what un-christmases are all about. 😀

So cool! I never noticed that foxes have nocturnal slit pupils. I’ll reciprocate: The Pallas Cat has round pupils, unlike other cats.
It seems more and more evidence is showing up about animals being sensitive to the planet’s magnetic field. Awesome.

Oh shame on you! Just waste half an hour on Pallas Cat videos… 🙂 Round pupils and those ears! For some reason I kept thinking ‘chimp’. Seriously cute. 🙂
Yes, the findings about their sensitivity to to the planet’s magnetic field really surprised me. I thought only pigeons and migrating birds had it. I wonder if this is something the ape family had and lost?

An hour of Pallas cat videos? Haha 😆, you’re welcome!
It looks like many animals have this sensitivity https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetoreception. Potentially even humans… Although I can’t say I have a particularly good sense of direction.

I suspected that they have some cat-like traits. When I was in Umbria in October, there were foxes and cats waiting each night for the chef to bring out cooking scraps. The foxes acted like semi-feral cats. The cats were regular indoor/outdoor creatures. Although some of the foxes approached as if they wanted me to pet them, I was nervous about them. The cats? Love fests, of course. But those foxes were something special.

I’ve never petted one, but we’ve had quite a few passing through here and I’ve seen them up close a couple of times. I swear I can see them ‘thinking’.
So, the cats and foxes didn’t fight each other for the scraps?

Fascinating stuff keep doing those crosswords. The wolf is really a dog with a good chromosome match but the fox and dog have very different numbers of chromosomes ; hence no interbreeding success.
The idea of species is a tough nut and not clear cut ( just like everything else) even Darwin with his endless obsession and big brain had trouble hence ‘The Origin of Species ‘ .
As for magnetism well that’s a very deep mystery but we do know Iron is everywhere.

Oh, thanks for that! I didn’t know about the genetic differences between foxes and dogs. Makes sense though. I suppose a distant ancestor was a canidae, just like ours was some kind of ape. The categories are really interesting coz when you get to viruses there’s even some question as to whether they’re alive much less plant or animal.

Like you, I was just taking a short break from working, and came across your post (I don’t know why, but although I have my settings set to get your posts via email, for some reason I don’t … just happened to see this one on David’s Twitter page) and popped in because of the cute fox picture. I’m glad I did … the video was amazing! Who knew? Thanks, Andrea, and enjoy your un-Christmas!!!

It’s the vagaries of WordPress. I often only see what people have written via Twitter of all things.
Glad you liked the video. I kept wondering whether those foxes have teflon coated noses!
