Volcanic lakes – red, blue & black

I was procrastinating with Jigsaw Planet this morning when I came across a bright blue, crater lake. That triggered an image search which culminated in the photo you see above. And no, that image is not photoshopped!
You can find more, fascinating photos and an in depth article about the crater lakes at:

Have a great weekend,
Meeks

Don’t She just? I would not have believed these colours possible if not for the internet. Oh, and did you see the pink lakes that Cage linked to? So very, very pink. lol

I didn’t know about this! Seriously cool. And that’s the same island where remains of Homo floresiensis (an extinct species of Homo) were found.

Hobbit man! Or was it woman? I had no idea that discovery occurred on the same island. I wonder if the odd volcanic activity had anything to do with their extinction.

Yes, those are the ones! I think remains have been found of both men and women. That was the only thing I associated with Flores Island. The Wikipedia article hinted that other species of humans may have hastened their demise (figures).

Aaaah. Homo sapiens have a lot to answer for. We seem to be incapable of co-existing with any species other than the ones we ‘domesticate’.

We not only co-existed with Neanderthal but we inherited some of his genes . Don’t get nervous but I have Neanderthal genes and lately I’m beginning to think that’s the best thing about me.

I’ve read about the Neanderthal genes, but I’m not sure they’re the result of consensual sex. I think your Neanderthal genes are a good thing too. I’ve often wondered if perhaps we get our empathy from the other side of the ‘family’.

Wow…just wow. I knew about the blue crater lake in Mount Gambier but these? The salt lakes in WA look almost like opals from the air, but those pink lakes are simply jaw dropping. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
