You know I love tech, and you know I’ve loved the idea of 3D printers for a long time now. In fact, a future-tech version of the 3D printer appeared in one of the Innerscape books [where Miira prints herself a new outfit as part of a ‘disguise’]. But this?
You can find the full article, including a really good video review, here:
https://sv3dprinter.com/2019/06/23/3d-printing-news-alerttoybox-the-3d-printer-just-for-kid/
This shorter video [just over 1 minute] is an advertising trailer:
Honestly? If I had a grand child, I’d be thinking very seriously of buying this for their birthday, just so I could have a play with it! I particularly like the fact that kids can create their own designs instead of simply using the stock models.
As scary as it may seem, this is the future of tech, and it’s coming at the speed of sound.
cheers

Exactly what I was thinking! I wonder if my daughter could make the Zelda headband or something like that for herself. She would flip!!

lmao – I wonder if your daughter could interest her Mum in making the Zelda headband….:D
I have no idea how easy it is to design your own models, or how well they turn out but…a toy that teaches skills and lets a kid use her imagination? Worth it, I think.
If you do get her one, can you please PLEASE post pics coz I’m dying to see how it works.

And, from what I gathered you can actually upload your own file, so, maybe you can use another program to make the design and then print it… If that’s true, then the possibilities are unlimited. 😁
I don’t have kids, but… One should test such things themselves, just to be sure they are safe for kids… yeap… A convincing excuse, I think 😇😇😁

I think maybe the material used would have limitations but…I’m so with you on the safety issue. Couldn’t possibly let little kids risk their pinkies. I think a thorough test would be in order…yup, yup….

the new mobile phone I just bought MrG has a 3D scanner in it, that’s supposed to enable scan and print. I have yet to give it a go. I’ll let you know how it seems 🙂

I don’t know what prices are like where you live, but where I do, a not-that-good tablet, or a game console have comparable prises. And not nearly as much value 😁

Haven’t bought a console since we got the PS3, but converting US dollars to Australian, the printer is still better value.

OMG!! It is fantastic! I do worry about the amount of plastic stuff that would be generated. I know they say it is biodegradable, but I think there are limits to that. But….the grandkids would love it! Christmas present maybe.

Yeah, I can imagine the sale of plastics would spike but maybe if the kids are making their own, their parents are buying less of the ones that don’t even pretend to be biodegradable?

Heh. That’s about the price I’ve paid for printers for me. I feel like it’s almost like how my family has bought computers in the past. We have a price point we use as a baseline, and the capabilities you get for that price are rapidly increasing. I will note that there is definitely a learning curve for creating their own designs, but it is definitely do-able. I recommend them fiddling with Tinkercad and/or Microsoft 3D Builder if they don’t have experience with 3D modelling.

Yes! And as a gamer, I have to say that it’s cheaper than an X-box or Playstation too.
Btw, thanks for the info on the 3D software. I might check it out myself. You are welcome here anytime. 🙂
