I wrote up a quick how-to for a student of mine and thought it might be useful for other left handers out there.
Step 1
Click the START button [circled in red] to display the Start Menu. On the Start Menu, click ‘Settings’[shown in green] :
Step 2
With the Settings dialog box displayed, click ‘Devices’ [shown in green] :
Step 3
With the Devices dialog box displayed, click ‘Mouse & touchpad’ [shown in green]:
Step 4
With the ‘Mouse & touchpad’ dialog box displayed, click ‘Left’.
The option for ‘Right’ will now be displayed.
Click ‘Right’ as shown:
Left handers should now be able to mouse click using the index finger of their left hand and the right button of the mouse. 🙂
cheers

I’m a leftie, but mostly just for writing. I seem to have adapted fairly well and do most other tasks right-handed.

It’s a funny thing, I’m left handed, however I keep the mouse buttons set to default for a right-hander; I use my middle finger to left-click. I think I’d be in trouble if I reversed them!

Hi Matthew. I guess by adapting yourself instead of the mouse you can use any mouse, anywhere, but…wasn’t it hard? I think I’d find it hard just learning to use my left index finger full stop.

I never used a mouse any other way: it was how I started using them. Might be my musical training, I spent years learning piano & got adept at all kinds of finger gyrations (one thing I could do was play two-handed chromatic scales to any named interval.) Using the index finger on the mouse wasn’t anywhere near as difficult.

lol – the only use I ever found for my piano lessons was in typing. My late mum would be scandalized if she heard me say that! 🙂
Did being a leftie ever impact you in any way?

Only when I was a kid at primary school, when being ‘kack-handed’ was a problem that had to be fixed. Alas, it turned out I was too stupid and useless to use the proper (right) hand, no matter how hard they punished me. I blogged about it… https://mjwrightnz.wordpress.com/2018/06/11/when-power-assertion-is-disguised-by-the-rules/
– and check out the link at the bottom of that post, ‘Ego Igitur Puniar’. I’d link it here but not sure if two links are going to trigger WordPress’ spam filter.
The possibility that I might be severely left-handed and that their intense ‘corrective’ regimen was only ever going to do me cognitive damage never occurred to the teachers. I never did learn to use my right hand, though they did manage to stop me writing properly with my left hand, though, permanently, so there’s that.

Ugh, no laughing matter. I’m right handed so never had any of those problems at school. That said, I do remember the nuns giving the sole leftie in the class a lot of grief. Those were the days when corporal punishment was still a common practice and even ‘good’ kids like me got a smack now and then. Slight diversion here, but I remember someone in my grade 4 [?] class did something wrong and wouldn’t own up to it. So the nun’s solution was to go around to every single child in class and smack us all with the ruler. I suspect my deep sense of injustice stems from that incident.

Actually I could add the second link in a second comment – this is the story of why the primary school I went to was so abusive over my being left-handed. I’d guess Australian schools of the same period were broadly similar (although the particular primary school I went to was, shall we say, quite exceptional in its sub-culture):

I only went to a public primary for my first year of school. Because I looked different to the blond, blue-eyed anglo saxon norm, the kids used to bully me mercilessly in the school yard. The teachers saw but did nothing about it. In hindsight, I hate to think what my life would have been like if Mum & Dad hadn’t scrapped together the money to send me to the local Catholic school. At least /there/, looking vaguely ‘Asian’ was just a curiosity, not an instant excuse to treat me like the enemy.
I feel for your younger self. I really do. I’m guessing your 12 years of primary and secondary education was an order of magnitude worse than mine. 😦

I’m having a smug moment, coz I used to adjust the pcs at work for lefties / injured staff . I’m a right hander, but have reoriented the mouse for about a decade, in an attempt to protect myself from RSI (lots of number data entry in my old job). What does irritate me though, is that every pc always defaults to right when booting up!
Thanks for the PSA ! x

Ah hah! -grin- You are one clever cookie. I only learned to adjust the mouse a couple of years ago when we had two lefties in the same class. DV and Cage mentioned about swapping for health reasons. I’m okay so far but I’ve been doing close up graphics for 2 days and I can really feel it in my neck. May give it a try myself. 🙂

I think the more appropriate word for me would be…. stubborn. 😉
And give it a go. it might slow you down initially, a tad, but you won’t go back plus it frees up your dominant hand for the number pad /mug!

You as well? Wow…I literally had no idea. So…you taught yourself to use the standard mouse with your left hand? Or you made yourself use your right hand?

It’s also a good idea for righties to do on occasion to give their hands a rest. Truly.
