I’m terrified of heights so just watching this made me queasy, but…Kaati has to fall backwards from a height and somehow flip right way up so it can fly instead of splatter. Yeah…
I tried springboard diving, gymnastics diving, even looked at some jetman videos but this one gave me exactly what I needed. Watch!
Okay, that was very quick so let me break it down for you. He starts with his back to the fall and does a swan dive away from the plane, but not straight back. He’s leading with his left arm and twisting his body to the left as soon as he’s airborne [keep your eye on that watch on his left wrist]:
Can you see how he turns on his vertical axis until he’s belly down towards the ground? Now he can do acrobatics or open his parachute because he’s facing the right way. Same with Kaati; even iVokh can’t flight ‘inverted’. π
You’re probably wondering why such a small point should matter…but you see it’s these small points that make sci-fi or even fantasy feel real. Plus I am anal. Thank god for DuckduckduckGo and youtube. π
Have a great Sunday!

Great idea to watch videos of the type of action you put in a scene. That way you don’t have to imagine it from scratch, possibly getting the details wrong. Fist fights, sword fights (well, fencing maybe); I’ll have to remember this for future projects.

The internet, and videos, have become a vital part of my research. I’ve everything from traditional crafts to huge 3D printing projects, and everything in-between. It’s great. π

Yes! It never seems so high until you’re standing swaying and trying to hold on to the ceiling…

Video is definitely the best way to research skydiving! π Heights are definitely not a good thing.

Apologies in advance but…I watched a bungee jumping video labelled ‘swan dive’. It was…horrendous. π¦

Well done for analysing that so closely. You are right that those details make the difference in a story. Probably why I am not a writer….not my sort of detail. I prefer the detail I can see!

lol – but sometimes words can paint pictures too. I do admit that yours are a bit more spectacular though. π

I like the way you think. When I was stuck on the fight scene I share on my blog today, it just happened that a guy who turned out to be a stalker wandered into our writing group and could tell me how a man and a woman would fight. Luckily, the member of the group he chose to follow to her home has hearing like a … like a … like something with really good hearing. She also has guns and went and fetched one. So no harm, and he never came back to the meetings. And the fight scene came out pretty well, thanks to him.

Wait…a real life, face-to-face type writing group???? Oh My Godfathers. And she had to fight him off with a gun? Did the police catch him? Is she okay? Are all of /you/ okay?
sheesh…I hope I never get to do that kind of research. Off to read your fight scene.

Nah, she just heard a motorcycle stop outside and stealthy footsteps on her porch. So she went and fetched a Piece and plonked it down on her desk and went back to work. Stealthy footsteps LEFT the porch and the motorcycle went away. We never met in that location again and never saw him again. One of us (not me) wrote a story where one of us killed him and the rest of us covered for her.

Ugh…still very scary. I think the reason we all love fiction is because the fear doesn’t cross-over from the imagination into real life. That did. π¦

He sat next to me in the meeting, and he seemed very nice to me. Of course, the dangerous ones always do.
