My Dad has been gone for eight years now, but he returned today, in the music of Zoltán Mága. I recognized the gypsy ‘style’ as soon as the Offspring said, “Mum, you have to hear this!’
This first video clip is a csárdás – the music for a Hungarian folk dance – and Zoltán Mága is what my Dad used to call a ‘Cigány primás’, literally the prime or first violin of a gypsy band.
Dad wasn’t a gypsy primás, but he did learn the violin from one, and that influence stayed with him his entire life. I grew up learning to play from sheet music [on the piano] so I could teach Dad to play songs by ear. One of his favourites was Lara’s Theme from Doctor Zhivago.
My tastes in music ran more to classical music like the Hungarian Rapsody by Franz Liszt or Ferenc Liszt as we Magyar would write it:
But Dad would have absolutely adored this exuberant gypsy music:
Pacsirta is a kind of bird, hence the bit in the middle. 🙂
Dad was a champion gymnast, a mechanical engineer, and in the last third of his life, a busker on the streets of Melbourne. He became quite famous as the man in the tuxedo who played his violin on the trains. He was 87 when he finally stopped playing, 89 when he died.
I miss you Dad.

A lovely tribute to your father and his music. So beautiful it makes me weep. I feel the same way he did about Lara’s theme. I saw Dr. Zhivago twice in the theater in the 70’s. The ice palace scene gives me chills even now while thinking about it in the Texas heat. I also love your music clips.

Thank you! I remember Doctor Zhivago with great fondness too, although it shocked me as well. I was so young I didn’t want to believe that life could change so completely in such a short space of time.

Yes. Dad taught me all his life, one way or another, and even his death taught me something. Life is precious and we mustn’t waste even a moment.

Very welcome. I listened to the clips pretty much all day yesterday. With all this tech writing, I haven’t been able to listen to music much so it was such a relief to immerse myself in music again.

I can see why your dad would like the Pacsirta, but I’m more close to your tastes. Maybe this one (without the maybe, tbo)

Oh this is lovely. My favourites are the Romantic composer that came after Mozart but I still enjoy his music too. And to think he wrote this at the age of 12???? Simply astounding.

Gymnast, engineer and violinist ~ that’s a most unusual mix of talents, but all would require precision and practice. What an amazing man your father must have been. xxx

Hi Anne. Yeah, he was pretty amazing and had what amounted to three major careers in his life. He was also a thinker. Pretty special. 🙂

Lovely tribute to your Dad. He sounds like a very special man to have been playing at 87. Thanks for sharing the Zoltán Mága clips — what a talent!

I have some tapes but nothing to actually play them on. It’s on my to-do-list. 🙂 -hugs-

I think that needs to bounce to the top of your to do list.

lol – this is very OLD tech. I think I need to get it all translated onto a DVD or something. Hard to know where to start.

yes you do. I got our wedding video onto dvd a few years ago because I was worried that I’d not be able to find anyone to do it (My Nan and Barry’s mum died soon after, and this was the only video of either of them). That’s why I’m saying bounce it to the top. I got it done at a Jessops Camera shop. Pricey, but it actually is harder now to find people to do it.

Yeah, that price tag is part of what holds me back. I’ll make it my Christmas project. 🙂

I bet you could find some young, aspiring student DJ type who has all the kit to convert it to mp3 and would be happy to do it for you. Perhaps contact the local Student Union?
