Not sure what your answer is, but mine is speed up! There are still so many stories I want to tell that another 50 years wouldn’t be enough, especially when I’m such a slow writer. And then there’s all that new tech coming online…
I’m not really a techie, you know. The true techies love all technology, whereas I’m pretty ambivalent about some of the innovations out there. Nevertheless, there are some gadgets I can hardly wait to use…like 3D printers for the home. Want that new top in your size? Not a problem, pay for the design and wait a few minutes while your 3D printer manufactures it for you. Or robots…I’ve loved the idea of robots since I first read ‘Door into Summer’ by Heinlein.
-laughs- I bet you thought Asimov was the only one who wrote about robots? Not so. You can find a description of ‘Door into Summer’ here.
Anyway, I’m saving my pennies for a household robot that will clean up after the cats, put the rubbish out, or maybe compost it on site? and mow the lawn. I’ve got a lot of lawn
But that’s not all! I haven’t had a chance to try VR yet, and it’s right up there as a ‘must do’ on my bucket list. I want to be able to travel the world from the comfort of my own home, and I want to fight monsters in glorious technicolour.
Of course, all of that depends upon how my eye-sight works with VR [I see depth via motion parallax, not stereopsis], but I’m hopeful, and this glorious track by Two Steps From Hell is how I feel at the ripe old age of 65. π
The track is called ‘Unleashed’… Bring it on!
cheers

I canβt wait for retirement! I am a techie and love it all and I agree. I hope the robots are around to do the housework while we can just enjoy rehires life.

Retirement has to be considered seriously since a young age otherwise it will end up being a disaster. Nice article. Do read my views on this. Donβt make your retirement a Titanic Tragedy https://thoughtsoftharun.wordpress.com/2018/08/01/dont-make-your-retirement-a-titanic-tragedy/

Yes, in my retirement my house has gone to the dogs. Formerly tidy and organized, I sit at my computer in my pajamas with no makeup. Surrounded by clutter and unfinished chores. The white glove test fails on every front. My resonse? Writing, editing, blogging, researching. My husband’s hopeful, “Are you cooking today?” is sometimes answered with a caveman grunt. What is happening to me? Older, yet more alive than ever. Bring on the robots, haha. Thank you for opening this door and also the music post. It’s lovely and inspirational!

Oh gods, Kathleen, we’re friends already! Tracky dacks and ugg boots here [it’s cold]. Managed to feed everyone but the dishes are stack up in the sink, the stove is littered with bits of friend rice from the wok and I don’t want to think about my floors. On the bright side, I did some really good work today. π

I need one of those robots too… π Too much to do and so little time! Still can’t figure out how I had time to do all I did before retirement……

I can skip the 3D printer, Andrea. But a house-cleaning robot! Oh yeah. And VR is fascinating to me (especially since reading your books). That is something that I would like to try, for sure! Technology is moving so fast that these may not be that far away. π Fun to dream.

-hugs- Yes, Anne, that is exactly how it was, squeezing things in when I could, or when energy allowed. I did get a surprising amount done, I suppose, but it also left me feeling depleted. Now I’ll be doing things at my pace.
Fear not, you guys are all family now. π

Even when we worked we were always really busy ~ rushing, planning, meetings, doing the job, caught in traffic etc etc etc. Somewhere in there we would squeeze in our passions, if we were lucky. The difference with retirement is that we do what we choose, and there is time to follow through passions like 3D printers (yes!), VR (yes) and cryogenics (no thank you). And the even more wonderful thing is that there is time to take your time. I LOVE sitting up in bed in the mornings, catching up with my emails, rather than rushing out the door with a piece of toast in my hand!
So, grab it all, Meeks. You have worked hard to be able to choose how you spend your time. Go for it……but don’t forget to take us along too!!

lol – don’t you dare! Your only problem is you haven’t found the ‘thing’ you want to devote your life to, yet. Please leave some viable brain cells for when you do. :p

Speed up and write, write, write… Never mind VR, your imagination is vastly superior to anything it has to offer (remember I worked in VR in the early 90s and have followed its non-progress). Sure, it’s fun for gamers, but what you create in your science fiction is so much more!!!

People laugh when I tell them I want to be frozen and brought back. Someone else’s head, body, I don’t mind. There is so much to do. It’s why I went part time at work.
Good track too. Haven’t heard of Two Steps From Hell before.

lol! That’s the base premise of Door Into Summer! I love the idea of cryogenics, but I think waking up in a totally alien world to the one you left would be hard.
Glad you like TSFH. They writer trailer music and ended up with a huge following, me included. Glad you liked it. π

I’m sure it’s possible to slow down and speed up at the same time. Not retired as such, rather redirected, we had not expected our days to be so busy and to pass so quickly. I no sooner seem to have finished my morning coffees and it’s suddenly 4 pm. I think I need technology that controls time!

Yes, unleashed is probably a good description of you but not just since you retired.I expected you to be a very quiet retiree perhaps writing full time. Instead we have someone who wants to know all about any technological advancements here, or on the way. You are a techie there’s no doubt, but a relaxed one at 65.
