When the ongoing saga of the sidebar adverts. began [here, here and here], I started a thread about it on the WordPress forum. In the days since then, more and more WordPress bloggers have left comments about the same thing happening to their own blogs. This is what one of the commenters said today:
‘I only by chance even found this out by going to my blog on another browser that I wasn’t logged into at the time. Many (most) bloggers have no idea that these new and multiple ads are on their blogs. If they were aware, there would be far more outrage on the Forums. ‘
That got me thinking. Many of my blogging friends can’t see the ad at all because they run adblocker software, but what of everyone else on WordPress? Surely we are not the only ones being targetted by these ads?
And then the penny dropped: the reason more bloggers aren’t screaming is because they only ever see their blogs from the inside, and from there, everything looks fine. What the…?
When I’m logged in to WordPress and click the button to ‘view my site’, I only ever see what’s meant to be there. I never see the ads so if I didn’t have my blog set as the home page of my Firefox browser, I probably wouldn’t know what visitors are seeing either.
But wait…it gets worse. When I write a post and preview it, the ads don’t show. I know because I just checked the preview for this post – no ad. Then I hopped on Chrome and checked my site – ADVERTISEMENT! So the ‘Preview’ function doesn’t show your blog from the outside either.
So how could this happen? Do the ‘view site’ and ‘preview’ functions only display setup choices, not real time information? Or is there a deliberate deception going on?
I hope I’m wrong. I hope it’s just one of those programming over-sights and not an attempt to hide the ads, but I’m asking all WordPress bloggers who don’t have adblocker active to check their blogs from the outside. To see how their blog appears to a stranger. And don’t just use your normal browser. If at all possible, use a variety of browsers to see exactly what kind of ads are being displayed on your blog.
These two screenshots were taken within moments of each other. The first one shows what appears on the IE browser. The second displays the ad. on the Chrome browser:

Yes, that Chrome ad is all about chatting…right…and that pretty young thing is showing all that boob because it’s a hot day…of course. No way is this an ad. for a dating site. And of course it isn’t an ad. for a porn site. Silly me.
Even if you think I’m a crazy old prude, check your blog from the outside just in case all your free content is being used to advertise something you really, really don’t like.
If you see your blog from the outside and don’t like what you see, please join the discussion here:

Not happy,

I invested in ad blocker, Andrea. I just couldn’t stand the ads. If you change to a theme with only one sidebar, would that send ads to the bottom of the post? That’s where I see them on most blogs. Not that you want to change your theme… 😦

To be honest I fear that if I went to one sidebar I’d simply lose the links to my books instead. I’m working on something that may end up being a great big silver lining. Will show you soon. 🙂

A year or two ago I found gambling ads displaying on my posts so I took a screenshot, doctored them in Photoshop and pasted them into the end of the post. A very uncomplementary version of the real thing right next to it. Maybe there needs to be a rapid reaction Photoshop guerilla team that shames the companies advertising.
That pseudo-porn stuff showing up on your blog should be replaced on request by something more suitable to the content. I paid extra for my TotenUniverse blog site to avoid that kind of parasitic crap. (Which is what WordPress wants us to do, I suppose.)

lol – I wish I’d thought of that! And yes, that is exactly what WordPress wants. The thing is, even if I could afford the base rate, what would I do when they inevitably raise that rate?
I used to have my own hand coded website back in the early 2000’s but the hosting costs just kept going up so I finally made the decision to cut my losses and park my domains at GoDaddy. If WordPress and the other advertising driven sites want my money they’ll have to offer something more valuable than just a domain and no more ransom.

You are so right Meeks. I checked my blog from the ‘outside’ and there were ads. So far, nothing as tacky as the ladies on your site wanting a chat, but still situated in the prime real estate of the post, top right side bar. The same ads were at the end of the post as well. Thanks for letting me know, and I am glad you are on our side!

Wow. I’m stunned. Not seeing it on my end probably because of AdBlocker. But, I do have a ‘Premium’ account with WordPress and I think that’s supposed to mean no ads? I certainly hope it’s the case — those ads are tacky and inappropriate. So sad how every platform is being ruined by commercial interests. Thanks for flagging this, Meeks!

I’m glad you’re not affected, but yes, it seems that as soon as a platform reaches a certain size, quality and fair play get thrown out in favour of maximising profits. 😦

Thanks for showing us what the ads do look like. Some quite inappropriate ads, in my opinion. It looks so tacky.

Hi dandelionsalad! Thanks for popping in from the forum, and yes, very tacky. I write sci-fi and how-to guides. The Chrome ad makes it look as if I write erotica or something. Nothing wrong with erotica if that’s what you write, but I don’t. 😦

Went to the forum and put my two cent’s worth in … let us know if you hear anything back from the ‘happiness engineers’. (how anyone can call themselves that and keep a straight face, I’ll never know)

Blimey! I thought I might have one ad, it does say that somewhere, but not multiple popping up, and it really does sound very sneaky that they don’t warn of this in preview mode. We need an action group! Pffft.

Yes, one or even two ads from ‘time to time’ is fair. This has gone way beyond anything I’d call fair. 😦
