If you remember how Princess Leia appeared as a ‘hologram’ in the original Star Wars movie, you’ll find this new technology incredibly exciting. Why? Because for the very first time, we have the ability to project an image into space…in real 3D:
I cannot stress the importance of this technology enough. VR is exciting and impressive, but AR – Augmented Reality – will become a part of our lives much, much faster. Why? Because the uses are almost unlimited. Imagine walking down the street and having a full-colour, 3D advertisement step out from the wall and ‘talk’ just to you.
Okay, adverts you can’t escape are probably a terrible example, but what about crafts? Instead of looking up a youtube video clip, you could snap your fingers and have a 3D presentation appear in your workshop, loungeroom, kitchen, whatever. You could look at that presentation from the back, front, side, top or even from the bottom for those tiny details that aren’t normally visible in 2D.
Well, this new volumetric display technology could well be the innovation that allows us to do all that and so much more.
-mumble- Those scientists might want to change the name though. VD just does not have the right ring to it. 😦
cheers

They do. I wish we covered some of that in school instead of having to calculate the orbits of planets.

Wow! I don’t understand it….but wow! The part in the video that did resonate was ‘printing in air’.
You know when I realised that a new age had come? When I saw a website address on the side of a plumber’s van. If plumbers had got into it, it must be here to stay. Maybe it was me being slow on the uptake!

lmao – no! You’ve put your finger on it exactly. That is precisely when a technology becomes ‘mainstream’. 😀

This is exciting. The beauty of the human mind is if we can imagine it we can eventually figure out how to make it real. I just hope augmented VR doesn’t become another ‘game’ for content thieves, bullies, sex freaks, and cheats.

I hope so too but honestly? Our tech is always two steps forward, one step back because human nature is almost equally divided between altruism and greed.

Yes. We enthusiastically adopt a technology and have to do clean up when we hit the inevitable downside.

Yup. We may be the thinking ape but we’re not the cautious ape!

That lack of caution serves us well when we want to build the kind of technology that took us to the Moon. We’re such a strange species, godlike and terrified of it.

Very exciting indeed, Meeks! Can’t wait for the home holodecks, like in DS9. Or better yet, the proof that the universe itself is holographic. So much fun to see new tech and imagine all the possibilities! These are just the baby steps.

lol – I feel the same Candace. I can hardly wait for the next ‘wave’ of tech to arrive. I still remember the first time I saw an advert for a computer on TV. I’d been in the industry for a while, but suddenly I knew that a new age had arrived. 🙂

Hello Meeks. Many of our greatest blockbuster sci-fi movies have already used that idea of real time advertisements leaping out at you in seeming empty space. You are correct companies are working overtime on it. Remember the idea that you could get real estate advertisements on your phone by driving by places? There were other examples of using tech to target people, but this will grow with time. Great post. You seem to have a way of seeing what is coming with the combination of tech and people. Hugs

Hi Scottie! Yes, it’s the next wave but each wave is coming faster and faster. The geek in me is thrilled, but at the same time I’m worried because often enthusiasm for new ‘toys’ runs ahead of mundane considerations such as security. The mobile banking thing is an example. I know it’s convenient, but we won’t know how secure the system is until the first big scam hits. I hope it doesn’t, but…-shrug-

LOL! Back when VR was science fiction to most people, I was working at a VR applications company as the marketing director. The job had two big benefits—no one could ever guess what I did for a living so I got a lot of free drinks AND I tried all the VR first hand. Now that the world is catching up with the technology, I really like the kind of practical applications you talk about. The time has finally come.
