More captcha?
Okay, can someone please tell me which of the captcha pics I should have ticked???

This is why I hate captcha so much. 😦

I am the kind of person who always has to know why things are the way they are so my interests range from genetics and biology to politics and what makes people tick.
For fun I play online mmorpgs, read, listen to a music, dance when I get the chance and landscape my rather large block.
Work is writing. When a story I am working on is going well I'm on cloud nine. On bad days I go out and dig big holes...

I find that the accuracy depends entirely on the internet speed at the time.

OH! I never thought of that at all.

Captcha is the worst, especially for those of us a little OCD.
The ones with letters or numbers aren’t quite so bad, but the pictures usually make me do it a couple of times. And I overthink them.

Thank you! That’s exactly what happens to me. I overthink them and get more frustrated with each screen. 😦

I hate the captchas where you have to tick things on a photo, especially when they make you do it twice. I quite often don’t bother with sites that do this.

Yeah, I’ll only do it for sites I’m very fond of. 😦

Can’t stand Captcha since I have vision disability. I never click on the correct pictures. The companies and retailers who use this obviously don’t think about people who are visually impaired.

My eyesight is deteriorating too and sometimes I simply cannot see what ‘it’ is, especially with the writing ones where they deliberately distort the image with other lines and fuzzy areas. Gah.

Yes. Whoever thought of Captcha needs to find another way to avoid fraud, scammers or whatever they are trying to prevent.

One of the other commenters mentioned the number based ones. Those I can handle, but they’re the only ones. And yes, there has to be a better way.

True that. Because I never choose the correct pictures. Just makes for frustration. Eyestrain is not a good look.

lol – no, it’s not! I picture myself two inches from the screen, eyes crossed and steam blowing from my ears. 😀

I share your pain. I am registered blind and unable to read print so use Job Access with Speech or JAWS, which converts text into speech and braille enabling me to use a Windows computer or laptop. JAWS and other screen readers can only read text-based formats (I.E. they are unable to interpret images), consequently I struggle with Captcha! Some Captcha do have audio alternatives on which those with visual impairments can click. However, in my experience many of these are more or less unintelligible rendering them next to useless. I have a Firefox add-on, called Webvisum which contains a Captcha solving feature, which I often use when faced with Captcha. Webvisum is specifically designed for visually impaired individuals and is a huge boon. I do understand why web masters wish to avoid spam. However the Captchas employed are a lazy way of doing this and companies in the UK (and other countries who have equalaties legislation) risk breaking the law if their Captchas are not accessible to those who experience sight difficulties. The best kind of Captch I have come across is that which asks the user to add “2 plus 5”, which is, of course easily accessible to users. Kevin

I had no idea, Kevin. Compared to people like yourself, my problems with captcha are minimal. The info. however is wonderful. I had no idea any of those addons even existed. Thank you for the heads up.
And yes, I agree totally about the number based captchas. They’re the only ones I’m comfortable with as well.
Ultimately though, I’d love to see something like an internet ‘passport’ that would identify netizens. No passport = not human. Of course any such passport would have to be unhackable, which is still pretty much impossible. But we’ll get there eventually.

In theory the idea of a “passport” is a good one. My concern centres around authoritarian regimes as such a “passport” would potentially enhance their ability to monitor citizens. For example someone in China who manages to get around blocking of sites by using a proxy or the Dark Web can find ways to comment and inform the world of issues the Chinese government would rather keep hidden. A “passport” would, I assume mean that such people could no longer comment unless they revealed their true identity.

Hmm…good point, and I guess the most repressive regimes would probably be the ones most interested in pushing the passport in the first place.
I wonder if the blockchain technology could be used somehow? If no government could access/control the passports then in a way the could become as ubiquitous as money was back last century. Even now, money is anonymous.

Me too. I can never work out if I’m getting a new lot of pics because I messed up with the first lot or it’s just randomly sadistic.

That’s ridiculous. They drive me bonkers too. Especially when I can’t tell if a letter is capitalized or not.

I feel a little inadequate when I can’t recognise all the squares with street signs or apartments, or get the numbers and letters wrong. I don’t like being made to feel silly by a machine!
