I don’t usually wear sunglasses, but I’d definitely wear these:
The frames are standard, but the lenses collect solar energy which is transferred to the electronic gadgetry hidden in the arms. That gadgetry could be enough to power small wearables such as hearing aids. For me though, the most exciting part is this:
‘Organic solar cells were chosen instead of more traditional silicon cells because they’re transparent, flexible, lightweight, and can be manufactured in a variety of shapes and colors. Each solar cell lens weighs about six grams, is 1.6 mm thick, and was made to fit into a set of commercially-produced sunglass frames.’
The blue highlights are mine, and they’re exciting because the same cells could also, in time, be used on windows. Imagine how much energy could be harvested if windows became solar panels as well as roofs? And think of all those huge skyscrapers – perfect realestate for solar farms. π

Cool π I clicked on this one in my RSS feed because I thought you might be writing about the upcoming solar eclipse. My part of Idaho is right in the path of totality, so I’m pretty excited. Something like half a million people are going to be traveling in-state for the event. Yikes!

Oh! Yes, I have seen that mentioned. Are you going to see it? I’ve never seen one ‘live’ so to speak. I envy you. π

I read the other day that the window thing is already in the making. There’s a prototype for the film: http://www.energymatters.com.au/renewable-news/solar-powered-smart-windows-save-40-per-cent-energy-em107/

Thanks, Pinky. What a brilliant article, and what a clever way to save both energy and money. I’d LOVE to have windows like that, especially in summer when the heat just oozes through the windows.

They’re saying it should be around 5 years to when these products will be available and affordable. I really hope so because we don’t have double glazing…

I have fire-resistant shutters on all the doors and windows, and they do a great job keep heat out in summer and heat in in winter, but they also make the house very dark. This tech would make the house much more comfortable all round.

I wish that there were Geordi La Forge Star Trek: The Next Generation glasses that would fix the retina issues with my left eye. It would be a Blessing if the sight in that eye could be restored.
