The man to blame for my current musical diversion is David Prosser. In his weekly blog he posted a video clip of Richard Harris singing McArthur Park – 7 minutes plus of quite amazing music. The lyrics, in particular, are beautiful, imho.
Anyway, having listened to McArthur Park all the way through once, it occurred to me that I had no idea who composed it [it’s Jim Webb if anyone’s interested]. That led to a detour via Youtube where I happened to see this:
Friends of a certain vintage will remember The House of the Rising Sun. The rest of you will just have to suffer. Either way, don’t blame me, blame David. ๐
cheers

I was 14 and I played House of the Rising Sun over and over in my bedroom, until my dad told me enough was enough. Thanks for this post; now I’ll be humming it all day. ๐

OMG I love Eric Burden and this song! There’s another song on that album I was crazy for, called “I’m Mad.” Btw, there’s a Joan Baez rendition that was quite decent. Thanks for the blast from the past!

-grin- Very welcome. As soon as I heard it I was kicking myself for forgetting how great it was.

I love a lot of the sixties music. I don’t think it ever goes out of ‘style.’ Even my youngest teen son listens to some of it.

I was a big Animals/Eric Burdon fan back in the day, and Alan Price who was with the Animals for a time too.You can see why I like 60’s music on the blog.

To be honest my great love is 70’s music, but when I hear some of those truly awesome 60s songs I remember that the 60s were pretty cool too. ๐

The arpeggio across the chords – you mean?

The arpeggios, yes, but also the whole theme, it’s become like Beethoven’s 5th, immediately recognizable.

Excellent song. In a former life I lived and worked in the north east of England (where they come from). One of my bosses wives (no, he didn’t have lots of wives, I had lots of bosses) left him to live with a band member, so the constant gossip was that ‘X’s wife left him for an animal’. So unfunny but we all enjoyed saying it.

-giggles- that poor man would have hated that song. Great story though, and a nice nod to 6 degrees of separation.

Hadn’t thought about the six degrees, but yes. I doubt he worries about The House. He remarried, got a very prestigious job and I think he’s living in retired luxury. Actually he was a pompous bastard, but there again, he never liked me.
