Did you know I used to build dollshouses? I did, and the pic below is proof:
This dollshouse, and two others, were ostensibly made for the Offspring, but if I’m honest I have to say I made them for myself as well. We were renting for a long time, and I think these small houses soothed the need to create a people-sized house of my own.
If you look at the left hand side of the pic you’ll see a white plate on the wall with a chrome handle sticking out. That is the winder for one of the fire-resistant shutters in my office.
The plate is aboutΒ 5-6 inches long in the old parlance, so you can see that the dollshouse next to it isn’t all that small. Today, however, I stumbled across some wee houses that truly are tiny. Created by Rosa de Jong, these micro-houses fit inside large test tubes!
I’d show a picture of one of them but a post I read yesterday has put the fear of the Creative Commons in me. I do not want a fine for displaying something that maybe I shouldn’t. Sadly the operative word is ‘maybe’. I thought I knew how copyright worked on the internet but now I’m not so sure. Working out what is and is not ‘free’ to post is bloody hard and I’m going to take the easy way out.
Anyway, copyright aside, if you go to the following site you can read a post which includes legit pictures of the test-tube houses:

Enjoy. π

p.s. My thanks to Marian Allen for introducing me to these lovely little landscapes.

You are truly multi-talented π In my day, children in TV shows seemed to have doll’s houses but I never had one, maybe that’s why I enjoy having the grown-up full size version. (The G.O. and I are getting used to the fact that we are really here and have a proper size house and a yard!)

Oddly enough, I made all my dollshouses during a ten year period while we were renting. Now that I have a house of my own, the urge to make dollshouses has faded. Sub-conscious wish-fulfilment?

Our two oldest girls loved their dollhouses! Their mother’s father (I’m their stepmother) built the houses for them, and I got to have the joy of taking them shopping for furniture and wallpaper. They spent HOURS making their own accessories. They made tiny little lp records (yeah, that long ago!) and the record jackets, little books with pages, sheet music with real songs noted in…. They amazed me!
I love the house you made — It’s beautiful!

Oh wow…! The Offspring rearranged the furniture and such but didn’t do much of the ‘doing’. Have your girls kept their dollshouses?

I’m pretty sure they have, though I don’t know if they’re in their attics, my attic, or where. They loved those dollhouses, and were most appreciative of their grandfather’s having made them.

If you ever unearth them again can you post some pics?

I love the tiny furniture and other things as much as the houses themselves. π
Oh copyright….it is such a difficult issue, but I did think things in the Creative Commons were there to be shared, with attribution, of course.
Hope you are keeping cool somewhere today.

Re creative commons, that’s what I thought too but apparently things are a bit more complicated. And yes, shutters all down except for kitchen window and aircon on. Just wish the damn wind would stop.

Yes, I hate this wind too, and I am not in the fire danger that you are. Apparently there are to be thunderstorms this afternoon, lightning, but no rain.

Hah! The weather bureau got it wrong. We had about five minutes of rain late this afternoon. Not enough to soak in very much but I’m sure the plants all appreciated it. Wish I could say the same about the power outage we had over here. Three hours or so of sweltering heat and no fans no nothing. Ah well. The day is over, thanks be to all and sundry. π

I began buildling doll houses and miniatures when I was home with my first child. When I grew dissatisfied with the kits available I designed my own pland and had someone cut them for me. Then we moved to a smaller house and now it languishes in a cedar chest, unfinished as I have no space. One day….

I hope so too. Building things, even in miniature, is so unbelievably relaxing. Plus you have something to brag about at the end. π

-grin- I keep telling myself I’ll have workshop built under the house so I can make some more, but so far the big house has taken up most of my excess energy!
