This is a must-read article from Quartz [another one of those tech channels I love] about what the movie ‘Back to the Future 2’ got right, and wrong. I was amazed at how much the movie actually got right, but see for yourselves:

I was also amazed at how much futuristic stuff my brain now takes for granted. Holograms are an obvious example, but the view ‘window’ I wrote into Innerscape is another. -grin- Wish I’d thought of that!

I’m ready for cars to go the way of the 8-track; bring on the transporter! Every time I commute to school I am terrified some road texter is going ruin my day. It is amazing how many people weave all over the highway driving their mobile phones. Progress! Let’s get on with it already.

Ugh yes. 😦 It’s illegal to use your mobile phone while driving here, but you still see it all the time. Apparently the only ones not seeing it are the police

Always fun to look back at predictions of the future (fictional or otherwise). There were two big World Fairs in NYC, one in 1939 and the other in 1964. My dad attended the first one as a child and saw TV in its pre-WWII infancy. I was a little girl in 1964 and the optimism about space travel, about life in the 21st century, was palpable. Now we live in a post-modern world of irony and social media.
At least it’s good for speculative fiction plots!
Thanks for sharing this back to the future article.

-cough- Yes, I remember when black and white tv was a HUGE deal and a transistor radio that you could carry in your hand was the ultimate in personal tech…. Now I feel ancient! 😀

Great article. Of course, given the way my mind works, the thing that stood out to me most was: “The first microwave-safe tray was marketed in 1986.” I thought, “Really? Was it that late?” Seems we’ve been microwaving pre-packaged frozen food forever!

Yes! It really makes you stop and think doesn’t it? So much we take for granted now, yet it wasn’t that long ago that it was all pie in the sky stuff.
