I don’t review movies so this will just be one long…IT’S BRILLIANT!
In the last 40 years I’ve seen three movies that gave women a real chance to shine – Alien with Sigourney Weaver, Terminator II with Linda Hamilton, and now Fury Road with Charlize Theron. Unlike the first two movies, however, Fury Road gave every single female character, large and small, permission to be strong. And dirty!
But wait… there’s more. Fury Road does not explain every little thing ad nauseum. Instead, it drops the odd clue or hint and leaves the viewer to fill in the gaps. As a writer, I love that the story treats the viewer like an intelligent adult. And of course, the action is eye-popping. 😀 I really, really love this movie.
night night!

I saw this at the beginning of the summer and liked it quite a lot. Mad Max is a great example of what works well for film where it wouldn’t work that way on the page at all, and yes, it is brilliant!

I’m not so sure. In many ways George Miller has done exactly what writers are always being told to do – show don’t tell. 😀
But you’re also absolutely right. The Daughter and I watched the ‘making-of’ type extras and apparently Miller didn’t ‘write’ the story at all – the whole movie was storyboarded…as in graphically storyboarded!!!!

That aspect of show don’t tell translates well to the screen, especially given all the action and lack of dialogue. But I think a book has a harder time getting away with all action and less dialogue. In any case, I loved it. Interesting too that Max is the main character and Furiosa is the protagonist. That’s no small storytelling feat.

lol – yes! And even more impressive is that Miller resisted any pressure to create a romance between them!

YES! I LOVED this movie. Non-stop action, strong women where the MC (the man) was secondary to Theron’s character arc, really phenonenal stunts (I read somewhere there was very little CG). 😀

Yes to all! The Daughter, who is the font of all knowledge on movies, says that even the fire was real. Apparently Miller intended to CG the fire but everyone on set was so hyped up, they persuaded him to do it ‘for real’. 🙂

That good news… we haven’t seen it. Missed the in-cinema boat as we were sick with the lurgy but it’s on our Quick Flix list 🙂

Mwahahaha! This weekend, get some nice fish and chips, and maybe a packet of choc biscuits, hire the DVD from your supermarket, sit down and apply eye-drops [needed because you won’t blink for well over an hour]. Then sit back and enjoy the ride. 😀

Now that’s it’s out on DVD I’ll have to watch it. I love that there’s a strong female character, though I’ve heard the rest of the women are in skimpy clothes and objectified. Is that the case?

The first scene in which you see the other women your heart will sink – yes, pretty, yes skimpy clothes, yes they are ‘breeders’. But trust me, these ladies are not what they seem. 😀

I know action movies are not everyone’s cup of tea, but this movie really is not your average action movie. 🙂
