As more and more of the world becomes automated, what will there be left for humans?
My answer: beauty and the creation of designs never conceived before. I can imagine a robot making this piece of glass, but I can’t imagine a robot conceiving of the design. That is our job.
Work has been using up a lot of my energy lately, but I’ll try and post lovely gems like these when I can. Enjoy.
I am the kind of person who always has to know why things are the way they are so my interests range from genetics and biology to politics and what makes people tick.
For fun I play online mmorpgs, read, listen to a music, dance when I get the chance and landscape my rather large block.
Work is writing. When a story I am working on is going well I'm on cloud nine. On bad days I go out and dig big holes...

Beautiful, thanks Meeks. But I wonder whether robots would be able to be make something like that this. The process would need the creative input as well, to know instinctively when to stop, change, add etc. Can robots be creative? I know so little about AI that I don’t know the answer to this.
Hope work is treating you well. X x
I think the process would have to be ‘measured’ to the umpteenth degree and codified. Then I think robots could do it, yes. But what you’d get would be a different kind of production line product.
We’d have to rethink what we consider to be art. And beauty. Because a robot could create perfection, but would that be truly beautiful?
So beautiful. I’ve had the immense pleasure of watching glass creations come to life at the Corning Glass Factory in upstate New York, seemingly designed on the fly. It’s amazing. Humans are amazing.
We are such a paradoxical species, aren’t we? No wonder our mythology is full of angels and demons. This video was definitely on the side of the angels for me. ๐

-grin- Odd isn’t it? We strive for perfection yet the minute we make something that achieves perfection we no longer value whatever it is.

Wonderful craftsmanship. We’re capable of so much as a species in the way of creation and yet concentrate more on destruction.

That is really quite amazing. Such a beautiful process. Definitely can’t see a robot conceiving of the design. Well said.
