Blog stats

I’m trying not to count my chickens before they’re hatched but… I’m so excited! My total views stand at 993. Just 7 more to go and I’ll hit the magic 1000 mark!

Ok, this is the point at which all experienced bloggers should just look away. You noticed that word ‘total’ and you felt that sinking, cringing feeling…right? Right. You know. Β 993 views is not the views I’ve had today, it’s the total number of views I’ve had for all the days since I started blogging.

As an all time total 993 views is not much and I admit it but they are MY views and I’m as proud of them as any first time mum. My baby may be small and barely out of the humidicrib but it’s alive and it’s growing! So before I go on I’d like to thank all my lovely mid-wives and mid-husbands out there. Thank you one and all! And a special thank you to my ‘regulars’. You know who you are πŸ™‚ ACFlory is a bit too reserved to send you hugs but Meeka is jumping up and down and blowing kisses!

So… what’s the big deal with blog stats? Well, as any blogger will tell you, stats are what tell you a) how well you are doing and b) what is actually ‘selling’.

Clearly I’m not selling the kind of product that you can pick up and hold in yours hands but I am definitely trying to sell something and that something is ideas. Sometimes those ideas revolve around information that I have and want to share, like my posts on bushfires or even my recipe for chocolate mousse cake. Most of the time though I’m trying to communicate less tangible ideas such as what I think constitutes a ‘great’ book over a merely ‘good’ book. These ideas are intensely subjective so when I find that they resonate with readers out in the digital world I feel as if I’ve found new kindred spirits.

That’s not to say that I’m only looking for people who agree with me – how boring would that be? In time I hope Meeka’s Mind becomes the kind of place people can come to for a good, old fashioned debate. Note I said ‘debate’ not flame war! For the non-gamers out there flame wars are nasty fights that occur on forums when reasoned debate degenerates into vicious name calling, put-downs and the kind of aggressive behaviour usually associated withΒ  sharks and feeding frenzies. That is not what I want so trolls please stay away. [Trolls are gamers who cruise forums with the sole purpose of starting flame wars]. Everyone else please come on in!

But I digress. So stats are vital for the health of your blog but how much should a blogger care about them? Well the answer to that is again going to be very subjective. I personally believe that you should blog about the things that you feel passionate about, whether they ‘sell’ or not. However having said that I will admit that I probably would not be writing as many reviews as I do if it were not for the positive feedback I have received. On the other hand when I posted about Charlotte and Jonathon, the young duo who auditioned for Britain You Have Talent, I honestly did not think it would have the impact that it did. Why? Well… opera is not exactly everyone’s cup of tea is it? And I usually feel like some kind of weird dinosaur when I confess to loving opera. Β But perhaps the response to that particular post had more to do with our love of the under-dog and the personalities of those two young people than it did to opera. I know that I felt uplifted by them. They showed me that courage, loyalty and friendship are still alive and well. Moreover the response of the audience showed that all of us recognize those qualities and want them in our lives.Β One such moment is enough to restore my faith in humanity and it seems I’m not alone in feeling that way.

And on that uplifting thought I’m going to end this post and go check my stats again because… hey, I’m only human πŸ˜‰

p.s. 996!

About acflory

I am the kind of person who always has to know why things are the way they are so my interests range from genetics and biology to politics and what makes people tick. For fun I play online mmorpgs, read, listen to a music, dance when I get the chance and landscape my rather large block. Work is writing. When a story I am working on is going well I'm on cloud nine. On bad days I go out and dig big holes... View all posts by acflory

I was thinking about my stats this morning too! I do keep track of them because I am always wondering what it is that people are the most interested in me ranting about. I am also really interested in which country any new readers come from.

If I have a good day I try to work out what it is that attracted people and hope I can do something to replicate it next time. I love the comments too. When you blog away and nobody comments or ‘likes’ you feel like the hits are all random mistakes, and that nobody cares after all *sob* πŸ˜‰

No cringing here over keeping track! I think that if you stop caring about who reads your blog you need a sharp smack in the ear’ole πŸ˜€

lmao – heaven forbid I should want a smack in the ear’ole!

To be honest I didn’t think anybody would read my posts at all when I started back in December so I almost fell off my chair the first time I saw that lovely little orange number on my screen. Now though I’m like you – I pray that someone will comment and feel so unloved when ‘they’ don’t πŸ˜€

Btw just a little more crowing…. 1008! -dance dance-

Thank you, thank you! I will try but I’ve worked out that I’m sort of riding piggy-back on the work of authors such as yourself. So you all deserve the kudos rather than me. Having said that though… I’ll take it! Give it back. Mine… precious… mine…

None of us would still carry the human gene if we could sit here and say ‘Hey, I don’t care who sees my blogs’. It might be our way of pouring out whatever moves us or gripes us but we have to feel we matter. Having said that, I know my stats daily on one site and haven’t a clue how to find them on another.
I’m trying to find a balance between posting too often and getting off my lazy bum and posting often enough to be remembered by anyone. Then I have to cope with the thought that no-one is going to be interested in my personal life on one site coupled with Author interviews, and the personal life of my cat on another. I hate to admit the cat wins most often.
I’m grateful to you for your description of Flame Wars as I’ve never been able to put a term to that fight for the last chocolate eclaire at tea time.
Keep up the good work and the fans will build up, they know quality when they see it and like me enjoy a good touch of humour.
Congratulations on passing that milestone of 1000.

Hello & CONGRATULATIONS!!! That’s an impressive number. How long has your blog been launched. My launch date was March 23. I’ve been trying to find out what my stats should look like by now. I do have traffic. I think it’s quite a bit given the 3 weeks. I’m just not sure how it compares to others. Plus, since I run a blog on sex related topics (NOT A PORN SITE) I’m sure 98% of my traffic is from people who was really trying to find a shot of a woman having a screaming O…. not someone just talking about one on an occasional basis. LOL Again,CONGRATULATIONS!! If you want to swing by (or click over) my place, I’m at http://sexualtoppings.com. Have a good night and good luck reaching your next milestone. πŸ˜€

Thanks Jaycee πŸ™‚ I just had a look at your blog and my only comment would be that you need more posts πŸ™‚ I’ve been blogging for about 3 months now and my stats doubled each month but of course they were tiny the first month. Regular posts and good tags are vital.
Good luck with the blog πŸ™‚

You have followers?? I just saw that. LUCKY you!! LOL I don’t have a-n-y 😦 If you or anyone who reads this could critique my site, I’d sure appreciate it. I have a suggestion tab for ideas and stuff. You don’t really have to give me ideas, but an opinion of what you think would be REAL nice.

You are not a dinosaur just because you love opera! Lots of us do, at least around where I live, and I adore it. And if we are dinosars, then I am a bigger one since I even love operettas. So there, you may mock me to your heart’s content.

Yes, I think stats are important and we should pay attention to them — as long as we go on blogging on what we want to blog about. I am doing the weirdest blog ever — it’s a book in progress about the life of Hillel the Elder. I thought perhaps three people would come each month, and I didn’t care since I wanted to write this book and that was my way of being regular about the research and the writing. And lo and behold, lots of people are visiting! Proves my point, I think…

I like your blogs very much. I don’t always leave a message (nothing to say since I usually do so in the middle of the night and my brain is mush — but I enjoy it! How are your alpacas, by the way? Doing well, I hope?

Hi Ilil πŸ™‚ I’ve been known to listen to the odd operetta myself so I mock you not! And thank you for the kind words, I always enjoy your comments when you make them. My brain tends to go to mush by about 9.30pm these days as I’m getting up at around dawn so I know that feeling all too well.
It’s odd isn’t it how some things just fire people’s interest. I’ve had far more interest in my bushfire posts than I ever expected.
I’m glad your writing is going well but who is Hillel the Elder? A real person?
I’m in the throes of a difficult chapter at the moment but it’s not the kind of thing I can blog about so I may have to fall back on the alpacas πŸ˜€ They are all well just incredibly dirty at the moment. I think they’ve been taking dust baths 😦

      cheers
      Andrea
