I hopped onto Amazon a few minutes ago to check that Vokhtah was really there [I was getting bruises from pinching myself so often] and noticed those interesting bits of information Amazon adds at the end. This caught my eye :
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #29,996 Paid in Kindle Store
Hence the title of this post. Go on, do the arithmetic.
I’m feeling extraordinarily happy though because science fiction is obviously much less populated than say Romance/Paranormal/Glitter. And of course that means I have a much better chance of going up in the ranking as there’s much less competition.
I know I’m being wildly optimistic here but I believe I could reach #25,000… one day.
Okay, I’ll stop cracking jokes now as I know I don’t do funny very well. If I’m to be serious, though, and honest, I’d have to say that I really don’t expect to hit the dizzying heights of Amazon ranking for some years.
Yes, that’s right… years. And I’m okay with that, pretty much, because I’ve learned that the only secret to success is longevity, and a massive pinch of luck.
This past year I’ve come to know some amazing writers, most of them indies. You have met them in my reviews, but what you many not know is that I’ve learned from their blood, sweat and tears. All my indie role-models have produced top quality work, really, seriously, good stuff, yet none of them are on a best-seller list. They should be, but they’re not, not yet.
I know they get disappointed at times, but none of them are giving up. They keep writing, keep polishing, keep putting out wonderful, honest, beautifully written books. And they keep hoping for that pinch of luck to come their way.
Slogging on seems incredibly easy to me at the moment because I’m still floating around on a cloud of euphoria, but I know it won’t last, so I’m putting my resolutions into this post, to remind me not to give up when the going gets tough.
This post is also a carte blanche to all of you. If you see me getting all negative and woe-is-me-ish, you have my permission to apply boot to bum – your boot, my bum.
Love you all,
Meeks

Wow, that is awesome, the best I reached was 88,000 in Horror. I am very impressed. I just wish Amazon would let me use freaking paypal to buy a copy. Why you always need to have a credit card is beyond me.
What is your sales success secret?

I agree re Paypal! I’d love to be /paid/ via paypal as well.
Har de har har. :p Sci-fi is the unloved cinderella of fiction. -sigh-

I agree – that’s an excellent ranking!!

lmao – I really was joking!!!!!! Trust me, Rural Romance is a much better category to be in. Speaking of, how is the new book coming along?

I’ve been trying to ration my visits to Amazon.

i am super impressed that you have been able to write a book AND get it published!! 29,995 sounds amazing to me!

Thanks Anne but realistically anything less than rank 100 really struggles. But I’m hopeful that one day I’ll be up there.

Congratulations on reaching the end of your journey to publication, for the first time at least. I know from my sister’s experience that it is a great achievement. May this be the first of many novels. (I much prefer sci-fi to rural romance so I suspect I’ll enjoy reading ‘Vokhtah’ [I just bought a copy] more than her latest book.)

-grin- Thanks Rod – for the kind words and for buying the book! If you feel like telling me what you thought of it I’d love to know – good and bad. I know everyone says that but as this is my first book I’m still on a huge learning curve.
p.s. I won’t tell Jennifer what you said. :p

Read the book, took about four hours, broken by (a too short) night’s sleep 1:30 – 7:00. Most enjoyable. You’ve created a believable world and a believable culture. Plenty of action to keep things moving. If you’d like more detailed comments let men know by email. – you have my email on the site somewhere. If not, reply to this and I’ll put one up in response.

I’m absolutely chuffed that you enjoyed it and your comments about the world and culture being believable give me a warm glow, in fact my face is lit up like a neon sign right now.
I don’t have your email but yes, I would love to hear more details, and that really does include the bits you think could have been improved.
Thank so much Rod.:)

My email (created just for you) is comments@scoullar.net. You can send your email to me there and I’ll provide extra ‘stuff.’ I’ll read the book again first. My first read was purely for enjoyment – and I did enjoy it. It is a good deal better than a lot of work put out by major publishers.

-blush- Thank you, and I’ll send off an email right now.
